wrecked my frontier

sunday afternoon, i wrecked my truck. a deer jump out in front of me, swerved to miss it, and put it in the ditch. of course i did a lot more damage by doing so than if i had just hit the deer, but when your instincts kick in and everything happens so fast, sometimes you just can't help it. anyways, it makes me sick. i loved my truck. i should know tomorrow what the insurance wants to do with it. i wasn't able to see underneath it to know what kind of damage was done. all i know is, if they do decide not to total it, it will never be the same.

Bummer. I'd be heart broken. FWIW, I don't think your near a "total". You're likely talking $8K+ in body parts replacement and a complete repaint but unless there is significant mechanical damage underneeth, your just looking at a major cosmetic job. Last I went through it (with my YJ), a vehicle wasn't considered totaled unless damage reached 70% replacement value or there was a major safety/risk issue.
Good luck and keep us posted.

That sucks. There are a lot of deer around the highways where I'm from. I've had plenty of close calls, luckily I've never hit one or ended up in the ditch. Good luck with the insurance company, they're never fun to deal with.

Glad you are OK. Years ago a classmate of mine lost an Uncle who swerved to avoid a cat. From then on no matter what I will stand on the brakes but will not swerve. Once you change direction anything can and most likely will happen. I had a deer run in front of me and hit it but ended up with less overall damage than you.

it's sad to see another majestic blue crew damaged like that but the most important thing is that you are ok.

The important thing is you walked away, apparently unhurt. Animals suck, and I speak from experience. First one was a turkey vulture I hit at 70mph with my previous truck (damn thing took off from the shoulder, flew out over the road, but it's like it was too fat to get altitude and I whacked it). Fortunately only about $1000 in damage.

Second one was a doozy - me on a motorcycle at 60mph and out comes a deer. Instinct took over, swerved to miss, left the road, flew into a ditch. Got a helicopter ride out of it, 7 broken ribs, broken shoulderblade, broken collarbone, 3 fractured vertebrae, and a ruptured spleen. And that was being covered head-to-toe in protective gear. $100,000+ in medical bills, bike was totaled. Needless to say I don't ride motorcycles anymore.

Third one was this morning - out on a bicycle, tooling along downhill at ~25mph, and a stupid rabbit jumps out in front of me. Whoomp! (front tire) Whoomp! (back tire). Looked back to see a bunny not moving anymore after my 225 lbs. of smack on his back twice. Figured with my luck I'd have a bunny bone give me a flat tire, but I lucked out this time.

Yeah, my advice is to slam on the brakes and plow straight into them. That's almost always going to be the better deal.

I had a 17 year old girl run into a ditch in front of me on the way to work and put the steering wheel thru her chest and died right there! Oh yeah she was trying to miss a chicken that had run in the road.
