I've lived in both states and the annoyances balance out in terms of vehicles. MD has high insurance rates whereas VA has regular inspections and property taxes on vehicles (WTF!?), which can hit you really hard if you're driving a high valued vehicle or are using it for a business. But I don't choose my state of residence purely on vehicle-related laws...

maryland may be strict on aftermarket apearances on vehicles but once they are inspected your done, where as PA and VA have to get their vehicles inspected 1 every 2-3 years, and all honesty MD law officails don't really bother you about tint or exhaust for instance a cop may not pull over a mainly stock f150 with tint and dual exhaust as to they may pull over a 350z slammed with wheels and loud exhaust and possible intercooler, every state has their ups and downs about vehicle laws.

NJ no tint on front windows what so ever. I been driving around for 15 yrs and have always had tinted windows. the darkest i can go. 5% or 3%.
only ever got one ticket for it when i was 18.
in NJ they cant pull you over for tint you need to be comiting a moving violation. but i was told that now because of 9-11 the laws are changing for the whole county. department of homeland security is making all new rules for metro/city areas. found this out after a statey got me for tint a few weeks back. no ticket.
been pulled over in PA a few times only one cop mentioned my tint and he laughed and said "can you go any darker"!! he let me go to.

If its inspected correctly here in MD your gonna fail with the fronts because the rears with all windows up will make the fronts darker and not test @ 35%.Find some little mom and pop shop in the middle of nowhere you might get lucky,or just remove it and get it replaced once inspected.I have 20 front 20 rear and have been fine so far but at times I will roll windows down when Im next to the fuzz.
I have a buddy thats a cop in MD and your not allowed to alter the truck at all if it came stock with 16in wheels and you put on 20s its an inspection ticket but not often do they even waste the time on the petty stuff

PA is every year...i think its a good idea, i have been to states that dont have inspections....and wow you would be amazed at the hunks of junk you seen on the roads... Those vehicals could be a danger to be on the road. How often are inspections in MD?

only once (if bought used) and never if bought new, yeah there are cars around here i never wanna follow due to things detaching from the car and hitting my frontier, it could either be a good thing for a bad thing. not to get off topic but maryland emissions makes me angry also but thats another topic.

I agree, inspections should be on some sort of regular schedule after seeing some of the crap on the roads here and that can partly explain the higher insurance costs in MD. But I think it should be safety based, rather than a revenue making scheme. Just do a Google search and you'll find out how some safety inspection shops are making a killing by failing vehicles that are likely legal (e.g. suspension mods) but the law is written so vaguely they can get away with it. And what do you do if they fail you? Either pay to have them "fix" it or go to another shop, pay the inspection fee again, and hope they'll pass you. There's definitely a conflict of interest when inspection stations also serve as repair shops, but I digress.

But who am I to criticize? Technically, I am trying to get away with a safety violation...

I live in md but I got my windows tinted(They are illegal) after I got it inspected. If they give you crap then open your door and hold your drivers lisence on the inside and show them that you can see it. If you can do that it is legal to the cops that will pull you over. But I live in howard county so the cops are not really worried about tint here. And just a heads up. If you ever go to baltimore county they just got a new police commissioner who's pet peeve is window tint so they are pulling over a lot of people.
