I looked at both the Toyota Tacoma and the Frontier. The Frontier won hands down. I did not want a sun roof or cargo rack on the roof so i got the 2007 SE. It has Utilitrack, power group, value group and step bars. I have added skid plates, more to protect it from cornfield stubble and sticks on the forest floor than anything else. So far (4.5 months) I really like the truck and am glad I bought it. In ten years, I'll let you know how well it held up. Next spring, I'll be taking it to the middle of Quebec province for bear hunting.
That is very good to hear. I've had Z71s for the past 5 years and I am worried about downsizing. I realize that the Frontier will do what I need it to 99% of the time so I'm not going to worry about the other 1%. I average 13-14 mpg in my Z71 so I am pretty sure I can at least beat that in a Frontier.

Even though this thread is somewhat of a duplicate, its still helpful to people like me who need help in making the decision to take the plunge or not!

because I wanted a midsize truck, needed 4 doors, 4x4 and locking rear diff. The choice was between the Nismo crew cab frontier 4x4 or the tacoma club cab 4x4 w/offroad package. The Nissan was quite a bit cheaper.

I bought mine because

1. love the design (05+)
2. Had one of the best engines ever built by Nissan (Vq) 4.0
3. Nissan reliability
4. Options avail. on the LE
5. PRICE !!!
6. Not every other driver on the road had one.

I have owned a 2000 Z71 Extended Cab 4x4. I think the Frontier is similar, but they are both very different vehicles. The Frontier is definitely smaller than the Z71 Extended. The backseat is about the same depth but the Z71 is wider. The mileage is about the same, with the Frontier being 1-2 miles better on the highway. Towing and hauling wise, the Z71 feels a great deal more stable. In the end, if I did not lose my Z71 due to an accident, I would not have bought the Frontier!

But don't get me wrong, the Frontier is an excellent vehicle. On the other hand, the Z71 was paid for and I had to come up with almost $28,000 for the Frontier with tax, license and Nissan Extended Warranty. In retrospect, I probably should have bought the Z71 back for $1500 and put another $2-$3K to fix it. For about $4.5K, I could have had an excellent truck and have $25K in the bank collecting 5% interest.
