Cedar huh; that's a very soft wood...Im a carpenter so I wood(very punny..lol) know. I have a 'fish bonker' that's about 20" long, made out of mahogany...which is quite hard. I made it in grade 7 woodshop on the lathe. The lead would just make it too heavy to swing hard I think, so maybe next time you make one try using only wood, and go for something like oak, maple, cherry, mahogany....or if you want to get really fancy try teak it is a very expensive and resilient wood spieces.
Just a few thoughts

I really never plan on using it for its intended prupose. There's only a few onces of lead in the end, I didn't want to much because because like you said it will actually slow down a swing. Actually the bat is ceder and walnut laminated together; it looks pretty good. But as an added benefit I get that fresh ceder sent without a stupid cardboard tree hanging from my mirror...lol!
