Using Fronty as a toad?

OK, I have a question here for you folks: Can I tow my Frontier as a toad behind my motorhome? The owner's manual says that it is OK with the manual transmission, but doesn't say anything about the auto. Now all of my previous jeeps, as well as the one my dad currently has, has allowed for the towing of the vehicle on all fours behind my motorhome with no mods, except for the obligatory hitch. Even my Honda auto says its OK to tow it. And it is all wheel drive. At any rate, I would like to be able to tow my fronty the same way. It is a 4x4 '05 auto Nismo. I have a friend that is has towed his "02 that way, but I am still leery. What are your thoughts on the matter? Any help would be appreciated.

I was told by the dealer not to ever tow any 4x4 Frontier with any of the wheels on the ground and to always flatbed it. They said it puts wear on the transfer case and may cause breakage in some instances!! So you can take that for what you want, just my $.02.

Would it still put wear on the transfer case if you were to put it in neutral (transfer case)? I would think it would just free wheel like the Jeep does at that point?

My dealer told me the standard transmission would be OK as long as i didn't exceed 65 mph while being toad. This is what confuses me, dealers are always saying something different.

Is the transfer case of a different variety/manfg. than the Jeep?

I've always thought it was because the Jeep has the manual transfer case and the transfer case itself can be shifted into neutral. Our trucks don't have a neutral position for the transfer case!

i thought the only way you can tow an auto at speed is to disconnect the tail shaft which i have done before but its a pain in the ***.
Dont know about the transfer case but if it is not engaged in 4x4 it shouldnt matter i would think but dont know for sure

dont worry about towin' your 4x4. just keep the transfer case in 2 wheel hi and the transmission in neutral. as for the drive shaft being removed, thats only if you dont want your odometer to spin and keep your miles low

Thanks guys. When I bought the truck, I didn't have a motorhome, I have since inherited one for all practical purposes. The fronty is just under the weight limit and I didn't want to have to acquire a trailer to put it on when I want to go somewhere. Hehe, now maybe I don't have to do that...Once again, thanks guys

I would check your drivers manual again because mine says you should not tow an auto with the rear wheels touching the ground because it can cause serious and epensive damage to the transmission.

See pages 6-12 to 6-14 of your owner's manual for the details on towing. What is allowable depends on auto vs. manual, 4WD vs 2WD.

The transfer case has no Neutral position, unlike Wrangler's.

I wonder if ABLS makes the difference (see diagrams for towing 2WD vs 4WD). 4WD trucks have ABLS on both axles, 2WD have them only on the rear axle. It is permissible to tow 2WD with front wheels on ground, but not with 4WD.
