Under hood "Crunching" Sound When First Taking Off

I am getting this quick noise under the hood (drivers side) during the first twenty feet of pulling off and accelerating. Its like a crunch...or a knock...or an engagement sound...or disengagement sound... of some sort. It has me stumped. It lasts just a second then will not do it again until the next time the truck is cold and just started again. Always after its in DRIVE, always in the first twenty feet, never during idoling. Any ideas? Thanks

It might be the self check the truck does. When you hit around 18 mph the truck does a self check on the abs system. It makes a clanking noise. It only does it once per ignition cycle so if you park and then drive again it won't do it unless the key was turned off and then back on.

My truck does the same thing and I've been wondering what it was. I really didn't know how to explain it so I haven't asked the question on here. Thanks guys.

My '06 owner's manual makes note of it. My wife is so accustomed to the sound that she'll imitate the noise as we roll out. Others have compared it to the sound of running over a manhole cover.

60ampfuse is spot on. we get customers in here all the time after their first nissan purchase wondering what the noise is. it tends to get a little louder after some settling in wear on the vehicle, when its not quite so soundproof as it was off the factory assembly line. then people start making note of it, thinking its something wrong. every nissan model, to my knowledge, has this noise save for the Leaf (for obvious reasons)
