1. In what month will the 2017 model Frontiers start production? (I am not asking about the new design Frontier)
2. Are dealers willing to special order Frontiers to get what a customer wants, or do you have to pick from their inventory? I want to buy a 2017 Club Cab with NO options (I want to spend my money to build the truck the way I want it), and they are impossible to find on dealer lots.
3. If a dealer places a special order, how long does it typically take?
This will be my first Nissan purchase, and I am just trying to learn how Nissan and their dealers work. Thanks for your time and knowledge.
Here are nine 2016's that I found on the Nissan search site. Just put in for search (accuracy, price Low to high) Nissan Dealer Inventory | Nissan USA
Hope this helps
Thanks for your reply, Walt. I tried that and did not find a single one within 500 miles. I doubt that a dealer will go any further than that. It looks like dealers tend to "load them up". That is why I am wondering about a special order.
I special ordered my truck since what I wanted was not available(4x4,V6,6speed,open differential, alloy wheels, roll up windows etc.)I pretty much order all my vehicles.I ordered mine in February and took delivery the end of April. About 10 weeks.
What was cool about my Dodge was you could follow the build at the factory(Mexico) and where it was during the delivery(train).
My local dealer either could not or would not order my current '15...so I went to a larger dealership 40 miles away and they ordered it. Took 18 weeks for delivery in my case.
Think long and hard about whether you might not want the VTP items in the SV trim. Not knocking an S (or an SV sans VTP) at all.
I agree with shift_rush. The reason I bought a barebones truck was because I bought it to race. My Dodge and my Ford Focus have creature comforts that would be miserable without.
I used to work for a dealer, has nine franchises under five roof tops.
Dealers will do whatever makes them money. They have little interest in anything else. That being said, if you don't find what you want at one dealer, go somewhere else.
For instance you may have noticed it's getting harder and harder to find manual transmissions. Why is that, when the majority of the world, an automatic transmission is difficult to find outside of a major tourist destination rental car store?
Automatics make dealers a lot more money than manual, so they don't order manual transmission vehicles unless they have to. When you go to buy one, the salesman says they have none and saddle you with a car that costs more to buy, gets worse fuel economy and requires more service only to have more problems down the road... more opportunities for the dealer to sell you something.
Sadly, few people are willing to demand what they want from the dealer and that's how the manual transmission disappeared from American highways.
So go to the dealer, make demands. Get a written quote, then go to another dealer and see who has the best price and shortest wait. If they won't play ball, find one who will.
Car dealers have earned the reputation of being sleaze bags, I've seen it from both sides of the counter.
They do however, know how to throw great corporate parties.
Actually, today's automatics are getting better gas mileage than their manual counterparts, which would be one reason why automakers are trying to sell more automatics. Another reason is that the majority of people prefer automatic transmissions over a manual and a lot of the people in the US simply never learned how to drive a manual transmission. Now we are seeing automated manual transmission starting to become more popular, which also takes the shifting out of the hands of the driver. I have nothing against a manual transmission...I've driven tractor trailers with up to 18 speeds and have had several manual transmission cars...but, for me, if I'm going to purchase a vehicle in which other people may drive, it just makes sense to get an auto tranny. I've done my share of gear-shifting over the years and have had enough! The biggest argument I can make for having a manual transmission is that it would get drivers to pay more attention to driving the vehicle and maybe less time doing other things that they shouldn't be doing while driving, like talking on the phone or texting.
Thanks, guys, for letting me know how to get the truck I want. I have been dealing with the same GM dealership for the last 20 years, and always get treated honestly with no BS, but they don't have any trucks I want. I am hoping I find a Nissan dealership that operates the same way (but I am not holding my breath). At least I now know (thanks to you guys) that I can get what I want if I am willing to "walk".
Now, does anyone know when the 2017 Frontiers should appear?
I special ordered mine (a manual transmission), but had to visit three Dealerships before I found one that was willing to help and they were great. As Smacaroni wrote, the first two Dealers wanted to sell only what they had on the lot.
Seems like I would see the new runs about October time frame in my Toyota years. Just in time to raise those end of the year earning reports. $.02, I would go SV if money is the reasoning behind your S choice. The time you save lock/unlocking and rollin up/down will pay for the accessory package in a month! If you buy a '16 SV in November the rebates and year end markdowns will also cover the bump in comfort. Plus your cars total miles are artificially Low, since you havn't been racking em up for 6mo, your KBB/NADA gets a bump in value! In December '12, The dealer lots were FULL of marked down SVs with no homes and that was before the new Taco and Colorado Hit the market. At that time, my dealer traded SV Sport PKG was the best equipped White pony left in the area. I've owned base rig 4 doors with Armstrong windows n locks. I'm the cheapest prick on the planet(besides my dad) but time has taught me many lessons. Now Ill go to the factory fog light trim level on vehicles as I believe it helps the photos at resale time, better safety too I guess??
I agree with SMJ above. Automatic is the only way for me now; and not for the reasons you think! I have driven stick shifts since my first car; a 1959 Renault Dauphine! I have no problems with a stick but the fuel mileage is no big diff anymore and my feeling is they tend to need LESS service down the road. Kinda hard to "ride the clutch" on an automatic!!! BUT main reason is my wife can no longer drive a manual due to physical problems... See I told ya!!!
As to ordering, my dealer was willing to order whatever I wanted; but I found what I wanted on his lot, but he didn't seem to care if he had to dealer-trade or order a truck in or purchase off his lot. He did tell me he could give me a better price on a vehicle on the lot, but that only makes good sense.
Pointing out (once again) that an SV CC w/ 6-sp will INCLUDE the VTP items as standard equipment. These are ~$1000 less than an SV w/ VTP.
While I've seen that many modern vehicles with auto trans are slightly exceeding their manual trans counterparts...the current V6 Frontiers w/ 6-sp are rated +1 MPG in combined MPG EPA estimates over the V6 w/ auto trans.
There are most certainly many great arguments for choosing an auto trans over a manual. My soul & love of the driving experience dictate my need for rowing my own gears = a no~brainer. The 4.0 V6 + 6-sp is a great combo and a blast to drive. No 2nd thoughts here.
OP:
One can no longer even order an SV KC w/ 6-sp in '16...........so, I'm glad I chose to pull the trigger and get a '15. I needed a 6' bed and desperately wanted the 6-sp. I'm not in need of a 4x4, fwiw...so ordered a 4x2 from the factory.
My point is that what you may want now may not even be offered in the next model year.

Problem with EPA gas mileage numbers is that they aren't based on real world driving conditions. It's be nice if the US would upgrade their fuel mileage rating system like the Japanese or use "Real MPG" testing as they do in Motor Trend Magazine.
