I understand your logic and it makes sense if I wanted to keep the truck. But I don't. I hate the auto trans. Don't get me wrong its a nice little truck. Just not what I want or need for that matter. The way I figure I take the small hit in the short run with depreciation yet still cut my bill in half. 10k car + depreciation rolled into new deal + financing= 16k. VS. 32k truck. And thats not counting hundreds of $ saved on gas every month. Should take around a year and a half to pay off the loan. So I will be done with payments 4 years faster than with the truck. Oh, and there's going to be a bun in the oven soon so this will simplify things a lot. thanks for all the comments and opinions.
Even when looking at car for $10,000 its going to be a tough one for the banks to buy all of that negative equity on top the selling price of car if the car doesn't book out well. If you can, try to look for an import sedan because it will book out better. Also buy GAP to cover your behind if something happens to the car. As far as extended warranty goes, that may or may not work in your favor. Yes it will jack of the payment and amount owed on car but it may help you in the long run if something happens to the car in the near future.
just my 2 cents. Keep us posted.

First of all, congrats on the impending pregnancy.
Second, selling a vehicle at a loss to save money on gas doesn't seem to work out that much, I've been in a similar situation myseld.
Looks like you've had your truck about a year. Let's say you put 18k on the odometer for the year and get 18mpg and paid on average 3.50 per gallon, this puts you at $3500 for the year. If you buy a car that gets double the mpg, it would cut your gas bill in half, to $1750 a year.
If you take a $5k hit, you would have to keep the car for almost three years just to break even on the gas savings.
Hopefully it won't be a $5000 loss and it will make more sense for you. Good luck either way.
According to what he said earlier he puts from around 31,000 to maybe 35,000 miles on the truck a year just for a "commute" of some sort not including personal travel. So conceivably he could be putting 40,000 miles a year on this thing. He isn't going to get way ahead but it sounds like it might make some sense. Of course I am just going off a statement he said earlier and adding my own guesses in to come up with miles per year.. He would have to give us his yearly mileage figures and mpg he is getting to get a better idea.

I was going by this statement and adding some for other trips. He says one way but he has to get back so I took 240 km times 2.5 times 52 weeks. He says 17k and I am assuming that's 4ish months of driving his brand new truck.
That's a lota miles. I always tell people mileage don't matter to me because I only put on 8 to 10k miles a year. If I put on what I think this guy puts on it would hurt big time in the fronty.
yeah things have changed over the past few months to say the least. All for the better, But keeping a payment plus the amount of miles and gas on a 30k truck doesn't make sense. I"ve found a few nice cars that will make the long rides easier on the wallet and the arse and for a 3rd of the price. then in a year and a half I will be able to shop and pay cash for the I6 TJ I really want to build. I told the wife no more Christmas gifts over $500! LOL
OH! and this is the 2nd truck. The first was purchased before Christmas 11. That truck had problems and talked Nissan into swapping for a new one in March of this year. So miles are from about March 25th to now. And they are only going to go up, a LOT.
