The noise I was referring to was not high idle. After the initial roar up, I can raise the RPM as high as I want to without reproducing it. It did sound like the fan going full speed, but it's hard to start the engine and see the fan at the same time. Now I know.

A thermal fan clutch is engaged on a cold startup because the fluid drains into the working area when the engine is shut off. The fan clutch will slow down shortly after startup as a result of a pumping action produced by a difference in speed between the shaft and the body of the clutch.

Interesting I never knew why they did that.
I managed to get a look at it starting this afternoon and that is definitely the noise. That fan you can feel it run up and slow down from the wind on your face.

that's how I know when my wife sneaks off my mcdonalds in the mornings....
Haven't really dug into it, but its normal. my 06X has always done it.
