Spark Plugs-Parts and Labor

Got a quote of $297.00 from the dealer to change six spark plugs in my 2010. I already have close to 100k miles. He said plugs are $20.00 a piece and the rest is labor. That's $180.00 in labor which he said takes two hours. Must be a ton of stuff in the way that has to be removed first??? Is there that much labor involved to remove and install the six spark plugs?

Thanks.

Searching the DIY might help, its not too hard. I dont feel its worth 300 bucks either. cheap to do it yourself

Well the intake manifold has to come off. And move a few other pieces out of the way.
Seems fair to me

DIY, and it will be much cheaper. I don't go to the dealership unless its something I am unable to do myself. Or find a trustworthy mechanic around you. They will probably charge about $60/hour for labor. As Mesoglea said (^), the single iridium plugs are for $9 online and at Autozone or Pep Boys.

i just changed my plugs, installed ngk iridium ix for about 8 bucks each and new gaskets for 11 bucks each. doing that job in 2 hours sounds quick. probably if you do that job alot. not that difficult but i broke off heater hose cost 50 bucks. runs smooth with new plugs. just have to re-calibrate throttle body if you unplug it, takes 3 minutes.

I had the plugs changed at the dealer on Martin Luther King Day. After I dropped my truck off at the dealers I got a call from him around noon time saying the gasket kit that was supposed to contain four gaskets was missing one. He had to overnite one for the next day. Needless to say truck was not done but he gave me a loaner car. The spark plug job was supposed to cost me $297.00 as quoted but he knocked off 10 percent for the inconvenience. I don't think I would want to attempt that job myself. These engines are a far cry from the day when all you needed was a socket wrench and abot 15 minutes to change six plugs. Does it have to be that difficult for a reason today other than to try to prevent one DIY guy from attemting the job? Seriously...can the engine be designed where one could easily reach and change spark plugs with basically a socket wrench?

Overhead cam engines weren't around in the day I'm guessing you're talking about, it's not necessarily done in order to prevent DIY, it's just the way theyre engineered. Intake manifold removal to replace plugs on V-engines is not at all uncommon for engines today.

And for the record, with the right combination of extensions the plugs on our 4.0's can be done without lifting the upper intake.
