Shop put in too much engine oil....?

I guess my oil change place thought I had a 6 cylinder Frontier XE ( but I really have the 2.4 liter 4 cyl. ) because they put in nearly 1.5 quarts of engine oil over the H line on the dipstick. I didn't catch it for 50 miles or so. What damage could this have done to the engine ? It runs fine and I drained out the excess...but dang!

It should be fine. If you hadnt drained the excess out, it would have burned out mostly and caused some smoke, but it shouldbe ok.

That much oil going though your cat is not good. I would drain some out the first chance you get.

actually, the 2.4L holds more oil than the 3.3L. but either way, thats stupid of them to not fix that before the truck left the shop.

No cause for worry. A guy at work put in 5 quarts of oil on top of what was all ready in the crankcase becasue he "forgot" to drain it (GM 3.. The customer came back for her next regular oil change and that's when it was discovered, but there were no problems and the customer was none the wiser.

Theoreticaly, too much oil ( IE enough to fill into the bottom of the cylinders) can cause damage to your pistons/wrist pins etc as the piston comes down and slaps the dense & incompressible oil. However, an extra quart or so shouldn't bring you any where near that level.
FWIW, I had both a drive through Lube joint and a dealership add extra oil to two different vehicles on two different occasions. This is significant since I have always done 75% of my oil changes on my own. in addition, I've also had these guys over torque /damage the oil filter and drain plug. ( Lucky I guess, i had an uncle who had a dealer forget to tighten the plug and the motor seazed 1/2 way home!) I don't do allot of work on my vehicles any more but now insist on doing 100% of my own oil changes for these very reasons.
