Same gas mileage as a V8? Why?

So I was just wondering why the frontiers get about the same gas mileage as most V8s nowadays?

The Frontier is an old design. The "nowadays" v8s were designed in the last few years. Technology is amazing isn't it.

Easy. The frontier is an old truck with an old engine and an old transmission. The new one will likely get great mpg.

Check the mpg on the Canyon/Colorado if you want lousy mileage in a small truck.

I haven't gotten less than 19mpg with my truck so far, currently sitting at 1900 miles ,and while most of my driving was fairly laid back I have def put the pedal to the metal more than a few times. I think that's quite good for the power ,and weight of the vehicle. It gets better mileage than V8s in similar sized vehicles of yesterday, Explorer/ Grand Cherokees etc ,and makes more power than most of those offerings.

I'm certain it will easily pull over 20 mpg on a road trip.

Old tech. Also, the GM and RAM trucks use tricks like variable cylinder management to inflate the highway MPG number. Can make for a horrible driving experience and expensive repair bills when the system acts up.

In real world driving, the Frontier does much better since its 1000lbs lighter than a comparable full-size.

6-8 speed transmissions vs 5 in auto's. Plus, I regularly get 21-24mpg if I drive sanely. I think only the ford with turbo v6 gets that....

the reason our v6 gets mileage like a modern V8 is due to the the v8 using variable displacement technology in most cases.

It also has about the same power or more than some V8's.

wait until you have 180k miles and 1000lbs of extra weight/armor/winch/etc.

You'll get GREAT mileage!
