Oil filter question
Okay here it is...
for the last month my 07 CC has been making a dry bearing sound that does change with RPM, took it in to the dealer and they came back with the idler pulley bearing as the problem. Wait 2 weeks for the part and appointment (yesterday). I get a phone call after 8 hours and the tech tells me that they changed the pulley and the noise was still there everyone in the shop were scratching their heads and it just happens that a engineer for Nissan Canada was in the back and he told them that the noise was coming from the pressure relief valve unseating because get this I was using a aftermarket oil filter (FRAM) and the OEM filter allows more flow therefore no bypass. The truck has 15000 km's on it and this was the second Fram filter that I used (no noise off the first). Has anyone else had this issue or heard of this (tech's) or did I get a bad filter or was this a matter of the pulley fixing the problem and the dealership wanting to get some money back not on waranty (I dont think the latter because I've always been impressed with the service, parts and shop work from my dealership).

Some people don;t like the Fram filters because they have had problems with them. I personally have never had any problems with them and I've used them since I started driving and changing my oil (6 years of using them). The last oil change I did was the first time I went away from them, only because I used Mobil 1 and used the Mobil 1 filter in it also. My dad uses them in all of our other vehicles along with all his company vehicles and no problems. I doubt that was the problem.

Fram filters are made with cardboard end caps on the filter element. It is flimsy shoebox grade paper and there are many who have had these collapse internally and spew cardboard through the engine, myself included. There are also postings on the very problem you experienced. AVOID these filters and use a Wix, a NAPA Gold (also a Wix), a Mobil 1 or, better yet since you are under warranty, an OEM Nissan filter. Because the pressure gradient was too high across your filter medium in the Fram, the oil was running around and getting through the filter body unfiltered.
I am always amazed by how folks try to save a dollar on a filter to put on a sophisticated engine in a new vehicle. Use quality, not price, on your truck and you'll be glad you did. Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources Last edited by Boomer1 : 08-19-2008 at 03:11 PM. |

I Will Never Use Fram Again Because I Had A Filter Fail-the Bypass Filter Clogged/failed And Was Making A Buzzing Noise, Replaced Filter Noise Gone. Also Was Having Fluctuations In Oil Pressure From The Failure Of Filter, So Theres No Doubt It Wasnt Good For The Engine Running On A Restricted Flow Oil Filter, Therefore Frams Sucks And Will Never Get My Money Again. Because Of Warranty I Use Oem Now.
