Non-Factory Roof Rack??

I saw a last-gen Frontier that had a non-factory roof rack that looked something like a Thule or Yakima (clamps to the door openings). However, the Thule and Yakima sites both claim that nothing fits a Frontier. Does anyone know if a rack built for another vehicle fit the Frontier? It seems to me that when these "gutterless" racks first came out in the 80's, they were universal mount, but I could be wrong. I don't have a factory rack and I'd like to haul a kayak so one of these things would be a real help. Thanks.

I Am not sure if you have them in the states but Rola make 3 styles of racks for the Aussie Navara, the one I bought has a small "L" Bracket that clamps over the top of the door fram and a bolt to hold it into the factory hole that is already there.

www.rola.com.au

This is the aussie site but it might help

Yak nor Thule Make them as of right now

The big problem is the Clips that attach to the towers. Both companies said they haven't come up with a way to manufacture them becuase of the way Nissan designed the truck. I have contacted both companies many times.

That is probably the biggest reason why I got the LE. I have been hauling stuff on racks for years and wanted that option on my new vehicle.

You can get a devise that goes in your receiver that supports an extra long load. I thing it gives you an additional 4 ft. But that would only work for one watercraft.

The only way that I know of to get a rack on the 05/06's would be to get a shell, and mount the rack on it.....

This might change as Yak and Thule get more requests for this but as of a month ago, neither company support the base rack systems for our trucks....

The Aussie Nissan Navara website list "roof bars" as an accessory. I'm not certain as to whether or not you can get them shipped here to the US. I would think if companies like Yakama and Thule had more inquiries, they may get motivated to produce a product that would be compatible.

IF you want a topper, that is a good way to support a roof rack, and parts are available.

I have an A.R.E. topper with optional "rack tracks". The tracks allow crossbar spreads to vary from very, very close to each other, to almost the length of the topper roof. (For my 6' bed, the topper roof allows a 5' span--topper roofs are shorter than their bottoms. A 5' span is PERFECT for sea kayaks because most of them have bulkheads that are 5' apart; putting the cradles under the bulkheads is recommended.)

I bought Yakima Landing Pads that are specifically meant to fit in the T-slotted rack tracks. Yakima Control Towers (with locking cylinders) fit into the Landing Pads, and crossbars fit in the Control Towers. The Tower/crossbar unit is extremely easy and quick to put on and take off as needed, unlike with some of the older designs.

If your kayak is short enough (WW boat), you can carry it inside the bed diagonally, perhaps with one end propped up on the closed tailgate. With a topper, I can still transport a 10' boat by opening the tailgate and strapping to the Utilitrack cleats, then closing the topper rear window. But normally I carry the 10' boat on padded crossbars.

The much-longer sea kayaks must be carried on cradles, whether on roof or trailer.

This photo shows the (empty) rooftop crossbars, plus the sea kayak on trailer:

These are the racks I was talking about.
The Aussie Navara has a factory bolt hole in the door frame they are fitted too, work well and will hold 60kg's

I looked at the Nissan ones that are listed with the Navara but thought they looked like crap, these were less $$ anyways

After many hours of research this is all I could find for those with out factory roof racks.

http://www.offroadunlimited.com/Prod...g/amclamps.jpg

Description Adjust-A-Mounts The adjust-a-mount bracket is designed for vehicles without rain gutters or mounting on any other flat surface. This mounting systems uses rubber expansion nuts to attach the pivoting base plate brackets to the roof. The upper bracket then attaches to the base plate and the Defender Roof Rack. This mounting system requries drilling to the vehicles roof and should be considered a permanebt installation.

Then you could add this

http://www.offroadunlimited.com/Prod...donepieces.jpg

Defender roof racks are made from 16-gauge, fully welded, 1" round steel tubing finished in a black textured powdercoat. The aerodynamic design lends itself well to today's vehicle designs. Welded light tabs and integrated flooring round out the Defender package.
