New wheels on '06 CC: Limited Selection due to fitment?

I have been searching the archives looking for ideas on new wheels for my '06 Crew Cab 2WD. For some reason there seems to be a lot of issues with people fitting aftermarket 16" wheels on the frontier, BUT the posts were all made back in mid-2005 (when the frontier was new). Lots of talk about them hitting the calipers.

I plan on fitting either 17x8" (5.25" backspacing I beleive) or 18x8.5" with a 285/70R17 (or similar 18" tire) with a 2" PRG Leveling kit. Is there a particular backspacing I need to shoot for? Are 17" rims going to have any problems clearing the calipers, or is it only 16" rims? Why are people putting aftermarket 16" rims on a truck that comes with 16" rims?!?

And finally, I noticed one post where somebody stated that the speedometer was driven off the wheel sensors on Frontiers. I know this is not the case with Titans, since the previous owner of my Titan changed to aftermarket rims and didn't replace the sensors. All that happened was the low tire pressure light came on. Speedo still worked fine. Wouldn't they use the same system on the frontier? Reason being I don't want to dismount the OEM frontier tires to steal the sensors out of the wheel.

Thanks!!

justin, you are right. not much to chose from for wheels. if you look at 17s, there are a few wheel options, but if you go to 18s, there are quite a few. my wheels are 18x8.5. they have a positive offset of 25. i would not do any less of an offset because they will stick out of the wheel wells a long ways. anything from +25 to +35 offset is the best. the closer to 35 the less the tire will stick out and the less rubbing issues you will have. as far as the air presure sensors go.... the tire presure monitoring system (TPMS) will not work correctly unless you put the valve stems from the stock wheel into the aftermarket wheel. from what i found, this is something that most wheel and tire places will not do. a nissan dealer may though. my dealer said they would do it, but they wanted 100 bucks to do it. it seemed a little unreasonable if you ask me. i have never owned a vehicle with TPMS and have lived without it so far, so i thought "what do i need it for now". if im not smart enough to know my tire is flat.....then iv got something else to worry about. so to answer your question, there will be a light on in the dash unless you take it apart and unhook it. as far as the spedo goes, that will be off. i checked mine with my hand held GPS. at 45 mph it was 1 mph off. at both 55 and 65 it was 2 mph off. at 75-80 it was 3 mph off. i never checked anything over 80. i figured i was already speeding then, so it doesnt matter how far it is off LOL. check out my fronty with 18s, 285/65/18s, and the prg mini lift http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2346479

I'll second that!!! I finally settled on some 20's, seems to be the only size fitting consistantly. I was very hesitant at first, but am very happy with them. The tire is a 285/50/20 and fills the wheel well very nice, there was a slight rub on the splash guard, but a little trimming fixed that. Discount tire set me up and took good care of me... had no problems with the pressure sensors being removed from the original wheels and transfered to the new. They even gave me $200 credit for the original crappy steel wheels that came with the XE.

Good luck with your search... I would think the wheel manufactures should relize that the new frontier will be on it's 3rd year pretty soon.

honestly didn't think 20s would look good until I saw those. good selection

So...what do you mean by "fit consistentlY"? Can anybody give me concrete reasons why people are having such a hard time fitting wheels? I'm definitely scared to mail order now, so I'll do a LOT more research. PLEASE somebody give me details!

The inside of the wheel hits the large brake calipers.

The larger the wheel, the better chance of NOT hitting the calipers.
