That was my main problem with them, the traction would fill in fast and the tread would smooth over. I'd never been stuck so many times in my life as I was running through mud with those as I would've been with most any other A/T on the market except for the Terra Grapplers. For some reason, these Terra Grapplers handle mud more like a mild M/T rather than an A/T. They don't look like they'd do well or much different than any others but they do for some reason. The BFG M/T is a whole different story, that is a sweet tire. The BFG's aren't the best tire for me personally, I tend to wear through the tread on them faster than I like to. I've gotten more life out of Dunlop Rover M/T than the BFG's I had and I currently have 14k miles on the Terra Grapplers and it's barely noticeable on the tread.

Firestones are an excellent choice and I agree with Mainerunner that MTs can perform excellent in snow and ice. Bought my Firestones before winter set in and delt with inches of ice and packed snow and they outperformed a lot of other tires I have ever owned.

Check this review. This is one of the reasons I bought them

i hate to say it but too many people judge a tire by only a few people saying they suck because this or that. i had ko's on my hardbody and put them through hell in this desert and they were an awesome tire, never once let me down.
i now have bfg muds on and they are far superior on several types of traction/surface than those ko's but not packed snow and ice. on rocks/slickrock/rocky loose dirt hills(havent had them in mud yet)these bfg muds blow those ko's away on traction for those surfaces. ko's are a good tire for those surfaces but not the best--ive seen ko's slip/slide all day on slickrock. they dont seem to do to well on slickrock at times. in mud with those ko's they packed and sucked for traction.
i would never go for a mud terrain living somewhere it snows all the time. but on another note, i love the traction these muds offer so its hard to say. if i was to switch to an AT tire i would definitely get bfg KO's again.
and there is it, difference in experience, I'm sure BFG ATs must be good in the desert but I'm thousands of miles from the nearest real desert (there is a tourist trap here that claims to be a desert) so I base my opinion on what I've experienced.

I do live where it snows 4 months of the year (sometimes more) and other than a dedicated snow tire, I havent driven a better tire in snow than what I have now (had BFG AT's on my hardbody too, followed by Kumho AT's that I found to be a much better all around tire but still not that great in mud...we have lots of mud around here).

Hey guys,

This is an excellent thread; I've been using it to help me make my own tire decision. I was hoping some of you guys could help me narrow things down a little further.

I've got a 2005 Frontier SE 4x4, and I badly need to replace the stock tires (General Grabbers), which are badly worn after 43k miles and were pretty unsatisfactory in the snow.

I live in Idaho so the conditions described by almost everyone in this thread apply to me. Big-league snow and ice in the winter: check. Desert: check. Mountain logging roads... check. Rolling around town, definitely. And, of course, the occasional 2000+ mile highway road trip.

All-terrain tires seem pretty attractive to me right now and I've got the following on my list so far:

Nitto Terra Graplers
Toyo Open Country A/T
Kumho Road Venture A/T
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo
Bridgestone Dueler A/T 695
Bridgestone Destination A/T
Bridgestone Destination LE
Cooper Discoverer S/T

I'd like to keep it under $150/tire if possible, and would ideally like to get 50k out of them. Any advice you guys can offer would be awesome. Thanks!

I'm Surprised, nobody using
Pirelli Scorpion ATR ???
i use these with 20" rims
275/55/R20
they ride very good on highway and can tackle lots of fun off the road too.

highly recommended if price wasn't an issue.

For snow and ice, nothing beats the Blizak. Or you could try a siped directional like the ProComp X-terrain. Mine handled great in the Utah snow on my Silverado last winter...

For snow and ice, you want a lot of edges on your tires to get a better grip, since most grip is at the leading edge. (This is why the ninja motorcycles use 4 pads per caliper) In mud, however, all these small grooves would almost instantly fill with mud and become a slick. For loose, unpacked snow, an MT might be ok, but for hard packed snow I sure wouldn't want them. I would say the BFG is a good compromise, although I like the Goodyear silent armors better, since they have a flatter profile and I expect they will last longer. They also have kevlar in the side walls, so they are puncture resistant. I think the BFGs have extra sidewall plys too... I don't like siped tires. They will do great for traction, but I just can't help but think it will SIGNIFICANTLY lower tread life.
