I live in lower New York and see snow every winter and I have always had good results from BFG AT's. They are a quiet and great riding tire that i've gotten 50K -60K on 5 sets. Awsome tire for trails and light mud and very well worth the money. Most of the guys I know with trucks have them, with the exception of a few BFG Mud Terrains (Too loud for me) and love them. I need tires now myself and i'm holding off as long as possible because of the price. Not looking forward to it but I might burn through a set of Destination AT's for now only because I can get them for about half the price. Hopefully something comes up and i'll get BFG's.

Also, I've never been in the kind of winter your going to see, might be worth asking some of the guys your going to be stationed with, maybe mud tires work better in the snow.

Good luck

BFG AT's are not that great in snow. They clog easily and once they do you might as well be on slicks.

M/T's can be very good in snow...or very bad. The large blocky tread traps snow/ice under it and then it slips. If it's siped, they're ok, if not, I'd stay away.

The other question that begs aking here is what your experience with snow is.

I've had good luck with Kumho at's in the snow as well as the tires I'm running now (TRXus). The TRXus are not the longest lasting tire (got 35k from my last set and they do get louder as they wear but they start pretty quiet for an m/t) but they were the best tire I've ever run in snow.

You can get Cooper ST tires for way less than the FC2. They are basically the same tire, both made by Cooper. The ST has a little more open tread pattern than the FC2. I have about 8K miles on them and they are wearing good.

Check out Nokian Tires Products. I believe they are made in Finland and based on some internet searches, they appear to be big in Canada (lots of ice and snow). Not the cheapest, but I have found them to be the best winter tire I have ever used. It is all I buy for my cars and truck now. Their dealer network is small (at least in New England), but worth a look. No, I am not a dealer or affiliated with the manufacturer, just pleased with the performance.

you need an AT, do not put mt on-you'll be sorry when it comes to hardpack snow and ice.

anybody who thinks you should put a mud tire on is smoking crack, i dont care if they are sipped(maybe studded), but in hard pack snow or ice you'll regret having mud terrains on no matter what brand they are.

and i had KO's on my hardbody--drove on black ice in Utah and lots of snow many times going snowboarding, and never had one issue with them, they actually surprised me how well they worked going down steep hills with ice on them.

Nitto Terra Grapplers are awesome for A/T tires. We have a ClubArmada member stationed in Fairbanks right now, he's a Pilot who's been up there since last year.

we get the wet heavy snow here that packs in (it tends to become a sheet of ice on the ground at times, then we also have ice storms) that's probably why I really thought BFG AT's sucked in snow, up north where my inlaws live, it's a dry snow, totally different and I really didnt care for the BFG's up there either (not as bad as they were down here though).

I can honestly say that I am not on crack and I had ZERO problems in wet, heavy snow, ice, dry, light snow with my tires and I would recommend them.

I wouldnt base my opinion of a certain type of tire off a bad experience with one or two tires. You might note that I didnt say all AT's are bad, just BFG's. I also didnt say all MT's are good (nor even all siped MT's). If you are going with an MT though, I will go out on a limb it's gotta be siped or you are probably hosed (though I've never driven an unsiped MT in the snow so maybe not).

I've never understood why you desert guys have such a hard on for BFG AT's (then again, maybe they're great in the desert, I know they suck in what we have for trails around here unless you're staying on a logging road).

They are GREAT for the desert. I had some on my Durango and absolutely hated them because we have mostly clay around here. I did have it out on some sand and they did very well there, stayed afloat great w/o airdown and tracked very well uphill on both semi-soft and hard sand. The Nitto Terra Grapplers I have now do every bit as well as those BFG's did but they are MUCH better in clay and some sloppy mud than the BFG's were.

^^^^for wheeling the bfg ko are pretty much the best all around tire for different types of surface/terrain. i mean seriously look at how many times theyve been through the baja 1000 and won! i dont know how many times but they are the top of line for a tire taking that type of abuse.
i hate to say it but too many people judge a tire by only a few people saying they suck because this or that. i had ko's on my hardbody and put them through hell in this desert and they were an awesome tire, never once let me down.
i now have bfg muds on and they are far superior on several types of traction/surface than those ko's but not packed snow and ice. on rocks/slickrock/rocky loose dirt hills(havent had them in mud yet)these bfg muds blow those ko's away on traction for those surfaces. ko's are a good tire for those surfaces but not the best--ive seen ko's slip/slide all day on slickrock. they dont seem to do to well on slickrock at times. in mud with those ko's they packed and sucked for traction.
i would never go for a mud terrain living somewhere it snows all the time. but on another note, i love the traction these muds offer so its hard to say. if i was to switch to an AT tire i would definitely get bfg KO's again.
