I think at this point the only reason I'd get a taco is because of their great aftermarket support. They really do have a ton of options it seems.
I've got my eyes set on a car though once my Frontier is paid off (as a second vehicle) I don't need 2 trucks. Thinking maybe a GTI or some kind of Subaru.

I had a 2003 Taco for 8 years before I got the 2012 Fronty last year. I did not have any seriious problems with the taco the whole time, just routine maintenance, but the undercarriage rust was getting out of control and when pieces of metal started falling off the truck and little piles of rust flakes appearing on the ground under the truck where I parked it, it was time to get rid of it. I would've kept it another 3-4 years if it wasn't for the rusting issue.
My friend had an 06 and I was shocked to see how much rust was under it in 2010, it was crazy!
I "inherited" a 98 Taco PreRunner 4 cylinder w/200k miles that I drove for 2 years. It was slow as molasses, but drove ok for what it was. It had a valve cover gasket leak so I set out to replace it. This is what I found, couldn't believe it ran at all. That's what made me look at the Tacoma, but they're bringing way too much money for what it is, so I bought my Frontier.

Hi: All The reason I went Frontier is my Bro's.Taco got condemned at the dealer on the hoist. Frame rusted thru big time!!!
Also it's harder to install a 5th. hitch and pull a light weight fiberglass Escape in a truck with a composite box.
My nephew drives a Pathfinder...but his dad went Taco again! It was Toyotas money that payed for the replacement Toy.
My Frontier gets a Krown http://www.krown.carust protect respray annually. Best $125. you can spend to keep rust at bay!!!

Another problem with driving a Tacoma is that your ego goes up to a different level. This is what happened when a kid driving a Tacoma told a Titan owner to upgrade to a Tacoma? They're not even comparable

All this "aftermarket support" seems to be a thing of the past, as a member of the local Toyota site here I can confidently say there aren't many things for the Taco available that us Frontier owners can't get, at least in the offroad department.
When I look at there suspension and bumper stickies there isn't a single body armour or suspension set up that we can't get very similar.
The only noticeable difference seems to be more accessories available.
2010 pro 4x CC - Calmini Rear bumper, 3 fin m205 with cardone titan axles, PRG SAW titan swap pkg with remote res and 650 springs, PRG Shackles, Bilstein 5125 ext travel rear shocks and PRG 2" deaver AAL, 255/85/16 km2's, Hefty Skids and sliders, TJM Portable Air compressor, and 20" Alien LED lightbar.
Next on the list - Shrockworks or Calmini front bumper with winch
