Good story, thanks for the heads up. Im going to check mine today, and see when they were made.

Thats a sad story about the kid who died because of it. Now my ? is if i look at my tire and its 10 years old or something...what will be done about it? Is there anyway that the manufactor will give you $$ back to replace it? A lot of people dont just have the $$ for new tires laying around...

My question is that, if you are in the market for new tires and you go to a tire shop, and request a tire they have to order, do they have the ability to say to their supplier 'this guy doesn't want tires older than X years old' ? I would think that the tire shop would really rather just not deal with you, as this is something I guarantee VERY few people know about (including me who knows just from this post).

IMHO, unfortunately, I would think that very few tire shops would be willing to accomodate that request.

That's a real eye opener.
I'll be better informed in the future after watching this.
I'll have to check my family vehicle's tires now.

Just because the tires are older, doesnt mean they are bad, it's just something to watch for. And no, tire shops will not do anythiing about it. I hear it once a day("I bought my tires six years ago, and they still have alot of tread left, but they are old, I want new ones under warranty")- My response "sorry, there is nothing I can do for you"

Agreed, but it's an indicator and something the public should be aware of.

Its a good idea to check your new tires before they are put on.

the problem with the "test" they showed is those test were from when fo*d had the problem with firestone in which fo*d was telling buyers to use to low of an air pressure in the tires so you got a better ride. firestone told fo*d not to but they did it anyways. it wasnt a failure from old tires, it was a failure from an under inflated tire on a heavy a$$ SUV. fo*d, instead of making the suspension better in there SUV's figured lower PSI in the tires would give a better ride despite the warning from firestone. so take that video with a grain of salt. its not 100% truthful.

Well, that video was very interesting. I'm not sure where all their archive footage came from, but I don't think it matters. The point is that every tire has a date code on it, and we now know how to deciphre that code. We also now that tires older then 6 years may be dangerous and are illegal in some countries. What surprises me is that 14 year old tires are still sitting on the shelf and being sold as new. I wonder if there is a rotation and certain tire stores only sell new tires, and others will sell NOS? Definitely worth the look to see how old my tires are. This got my attention.

As they say in Rome "Caveat emptor" - let the buyer beware
