How to store my truck for 6-8 months?
I am going to be deploying to the middle east this summer. I am looking at putting my truck into a storage unit but I do not know if I am allowed to leave gas in the tank if I do it this way. Where can I store my truck for this long? What should I do to prep it for this long of storage. I live in Washington DC area so it is not cheap to store things and I do not have a garage or real residence. I have no real good friends that I trust leaving my truck behind with. If anyone has any military car storage advice or how to remove the gas (will it rust). This is my first deployment and my first time dealing with some of these storage issues.

Run her out as out of fuel as you can. Then throw in some fuel stabilizer for whatever is left. Put it up on jack stands. Get a battery tender. Duct tape over all intakes/entrances/exhaust so vermin cant use it to live in.

When I went out for deployments, pretty much parked my cars, never did the fuel stabilizer thing, no ill effects from what I could tell, put a cover on it, jacked it up one time after I put new lower profile tires on. Definitley cover up all the holes! Cannot stress this enough. I found mice poop in my car, and discovered where they had been nesting one day. This was all with my old Jetta BTW. Also, I was stationed in Washington state, wet and rainy. Came back to find alotta mildew, mung and mossy stuff everywhere. Recommend you treat/ armor all your seals, rubber, plastic and such to keep that stuff from rotting and coming alive, Also wash and wax all the areas that are painted, even on the inside of the doors and those areas that you don't see when the doors are shut. Make sure all the drainage holes and channels are clear too. Can't really avoid growths, but you can make it easier to clean up when you get back. Also I disconnected the battery completlely, although my cars were stored at occupied homes or provided storage on an installation, so safety wasn't a problem and alarm wasn't needed.
Be safe out there |

Are you military? Gov't should be providing you with POV storage. Here at Lejeune gov't POV storage is off base at a huge grass field where they rotate all the vehicles once a month to a new place in the field, so they get started, run, and driven. They have an 8-foot barbed top fence, cameras, and nobody gets in the compound that's not an employee that's supposed to be in there.

I'd recommend a place like 05XE mentioned.
Find a place where they start and move them them every couple of weeks. Most places I have used require a half tank of gas before putting them there. If it comes down to it, and you have a choice go w/ an inside storage or at least something on concrete. Parking in a field or something similar will allow all the moisture from the ground up under your truck, which in the DC area could cause problems and speed up the rust variable. Also, the government should cover it if you are gone for more than 6 months (I think). During your pre deployment processing you should hear something about it from TMO. Good luck w/ storage and take care during your deployment.

Yeah I'm over here right now. I just left it w/ 1/4-1/2 a tank of gas put some stay-bil gas stabalizer in there and disconnected the battery and kept it in my garage. I'm not worried about it. Not the same car company, but when I was in Germany I just disconnected the battery on my old 93 BMW and it sat outside in the cold in a parking lot at my squadron. When I came back, I just connected the battery and it started and ran fine, even on low profile tires. The other suggestions on this thread are good too. For six months, if you take just a few preventative steps I'm sure your truck will be fine.

you could also overfill the tires with nitrogen. This will help prevent "flat spots".
