Well, sorry your experience was not of your liking.
Most on CF here have nothing but praise generally, maybe you got a lemon?
There are issues with all makes and models, don't kid yourself.
If you get that Beemer be prepared for costly maintenance and repair costs.
The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
I have a friend with a Mercedes that has had numerous issues.
They all have their quirks.
They don't build sh!t the way they used to, no way, no how.

nope jaguars are waaay better than they ever used to be>:d
I dont know why he's bitcchen anyway. Ive done a trans, 2 diffs, and 3rd engine. And 4 batteries.. But im not complaining. I just go drive it and punch the skinny pedal... Smile returned
Advising to get rid at 90k is a bit weak. There are many on here with mileages way above that that have had very little issues. My own truck is a 2005 with over 240k on it and I've only had minor problems.
Maybe like Todd suggested you got a lemon, it happens with all manufacturers.
Best of luck with the beemer!
Basically every vehicle I have ever owner has started to "need things" past 80K miles. New, old, domestic, import, car, truck, you name it. To expect 100k miles without ever turning a bolt on it is silly.
Well, that's the miles that my first Frontier had the day I bought it in 2004 (1998 model, 2WD, 5-speed, 4-cyl). Both my kids drove it through high school and college, then returned it to us, now Mrs. Cusser drives it daily, and I drive it when I go up north by myself. This has been a great truck, sure in last 10 years I've had to swap in starter, alternator, radiator, fan clutch, and water pump, but that stuff is minor. AC is still all-original, great for Phoenix climate.
So I also bought a second Frontier 2 years ago, same set up but is a 2004 King Cab, 90K, essentially perfect shape, for the future, as newer are very large, and tough to find manual transmissions.
A friend of mine had a 2008 (I think around there) BMW 135i twin turbo taht he bought used. The car came with a 6 month BMW warranty and in the 6 months it went through two water pumps which BMW warranties the pump but not the bolts to replace it, to the tune of $500 each time. Then he had one of the headlights stop working - they traced it to the lights' "control module" having moisture in it (it rains 200 days of the year here). They replaced the headlight and the module under warranty - otherwise that would have been a $7000 bill. For a headlight. :surprise: He traded it in and bought a Jeep
I have 97 Hardbody, now my work truck as I bought a '12 Frontier SL with 19k miles in August, and knock on wood - no major problems. You'll have to replace parts and what not, on any vehicle. OH yea, my 97 has 247k miles and going strong!
Sure were, and I think they should've kept them going, instead of those early Frontiers. I'd love to have an extended cab 97 with low miles and clean.
250 in 10 years, that's a lot.you drive a lot? I barely drive my '12 i just bought, as I use my other for work. I haven't even put a thousand miles and it's a week from 2 months old.
BTW, what's your mpg city? Also, did you replace any audio? Show me a pic of your mini..
How'd you get 19 mpg on your truck FRZ? I get like upper 16 in the city and that's creeping and taking off slow etc.
I travel back roads that keep me in the 30 to 50mph range. I do have a number of stops to contend with but the Hypertech Max-Energy did make a difference when I installed it in early Spring. The 19 is an overall average of all 83 tanks I typically get between 20.5 to 21.5 on average.
Since I don't know how you serviced it, parts quality used, if you did all the work or turned it in, your actual mechanical knowledge, I can't say much.
But everyone I know who owns or have owned a BMW loves the vehicle, and makes the comment of owning a boat with a twist ... "Space in garage you throw money." And everyone I personally know that owned one eventually (usually sooner) says they give up and buys something else.
My 1st Nissan was an 04 Frontier and it died a violent death when my son borrowed it, (not his fault). And it had 172,000+ on the clock. Except for general maintenance, nothing extra in cost or mechanical problems. So I'm trying another.
The best forgien truck I had was a 1992 Toyota 1/2 ton and gave it to the neighbor kid when she turned 400k on the clock, and I retired. Most time it's the trucks manufacture, their quality and the owners personal care that makes it last. Heck, my first car was a 1957 Ford Fairlane with a 312 interceptor I bought from my father. And it lasted short of 300K before I sold it. (it did cost more to maintain that one each year)
But if your comparing Nissan truck to BMW car or SUV, it's like comparing Apples to Oranges. And it a user vehicle verses a status vehicle. Worlds apart and major general maintenance dollars per year apart.
Make sure you really know what your getting into, or your going to be more upset than you are now.
Hi. Not sure why this thread took off like a rocket lol. I understand that grass is not green on the other side either. And if it is just a bit greener I will be happy. Maybe as someone said I got a lemon with this Frontier but how many of them have had coolant contamination? It was one of the major design flaws and who is to say that all these things im experiencing are not design flaws? Have I had a different rear axle (heavy duty one) maybe I wouldnt have issues with pinion shaft. Have I had 2012 (as mine is 2005) year truck maybe I wouldnt have chain guides issues. The point being not all Frontiers are bad. Those that had issues ironed out im sure are good trucks and you guys are happy with them. The one I have is a pos.
Zanos' statements regarding lots of maintenance issues with his 2005 Frontier are corroborated by Consumer Reports. Since this was the first model year of the new design, owner reports turned in indicated higher than normal costs involved with maintanece related expsenses versus other model year Frontiers. In other words, not all the "bugs" got worked out of the manufacturing processes prior to the 2005 model year. This is not unusual for most manufacturers during their first few years of a new model. It takes a while to find and get rid of some of the glitches. FYI.
The coolant contamination was not due to a design flaw. Almost every vehicle on the road with an automatic transmission has the same radiator design. It was due to a flaw in the manufacturing process of the radiator which resulted in weak joints where the ATF tube connected to the input and output nipples. Now that that's out of the way, good luck with the Bimmer. They are awesome when they run right, but repair costs are very high. If you are buying one thinking the repair costs will be lower I think you'll be very disappointed, but if you're just buying one because you like it and aren't too concerned with repair costs you'll probably enjoy it. Just a heads up, BMW is definitely not without their own problems. Look up the water pump issues on the E36 line for one example.
So Wednesday October 1st is my last day with my Frontier. After 7 years its time to say goodbye. Was I happy with the truck? Back when it didnt have many miles on it yes now at 106 000 I have given up on it. I will not buy another Nissan ever again. I understand vehicles develop problems with so many miles but these kind of problems should not develop at this many miles.
Big problems
1. At 80 000 I had the famous chain guide issue. I took care of it and it came back again last week.
2. Pinion shaft whine.
3. Transmission makes "whining down" noises when Im about to make full stop.
There are numerous small issues with it and i dont care to list them on here. The truth is this truck was one big money pit. I have spent more time under it than driving it (so it seems).
I guess why I made this thread is jut to warn you guys. If its got 90 000 miles get rid of if you can.
I will make another thread as Im selling rear differential gear kit that I purchased off ebay to take care of that pinion shaft whine. If anyone is interested its brand new and I paid 175 for it. I will let it go for 125.
Well come on any auto forum and bash the sh!t out of that make and model and you are more than likely going to get rebuttals.
Give everyone a break on that note please.
The fact remains that all autos suffer from issues that the manufacturer should have sorted out before it reaches the populace.
End of story, period, over and done and the truth to boot.
This is fantastic! So, you come into a forum that is comprised entirely of entusiasts of one particular vehicle, make a statement that was intended to irritate people (A.K.A. trolling) and then you act surprised and offended when people tell you that you are wrong.
:sign7:
Given the fact that it seems like you do your own work on your vehicles, maybe the problem wasn't the truck. Maybe you should fire your mechanic.
Not sure how calling my own truck pos irritates some of you. I mean really? Were you the ones driving my truck? Were you the ones spending countless hours under it? I dont think so my friends. I was, so I have every right to call it pos if I want. The title of the thread was not there to ignite any kind of fights. It was there because of what I think about my own personal truck. The one I drove for 7 years. Get it?
I should have not made this thread at all.
On my last day with that truck I took girlfriend to the store and as I was outside waiting for her and truck idling, it started to shake like crazy. So glad its gone.
You calling your truck a POS didn't bother or irritate me at all.
You may well have that one in a <insert number of your choice here> that was assembled with bad karma or something. It happens to every manufacturer.
I just found the notion that somehow getting a BMW was necessarily going to be cheaper to maintain or more trouble free pretty damn amusing.
BMW has certainly improved the reliability of their cars in recent years (according to Consumer Reports data) but it wasn't too many years ago that their reliability across their range of models was pretty abysmal.
Sorry about your experience. I have nothing but good things to say about my little abused truck for the past 14 years. I bought this because my dad had a '95 that went 250K with only replacing the brakes and rotors until it was totaled in a 5 car wreck.
But the fact that you're going from a frontier to a Beemer (if this is your only vehicle) kinda shows you didn't need a truck in the 1st place?
Alot of people here obviously treat their trucks like their babies, and your initial post comes across as derogatory whether it was your intent or not
I'm sure I speak for the majority of people on here that we don't like the fact that your truck cost you the time and money that it did.
As I stated, most of us have had mostly positive experiences with our trucks or we would have gotten rid of them like you are now.
We all wish you well on your next vehicle, whatever it ends up being.
Anything I deem as bashing from here, in this thread, will be deleted or the thread will be locked.
Good luck, and may the automobile Gods be with you on your next ride.
I literally ignored my frontier for 10 years (my time and money was in racing), only changing the oil and it never had a single issue. At 110k I did the timing belt just in case and only after 130k miles did it develop a few leaks. Fixed them and I hope to get another 130k miles out of it.
I am convinced that the vast majority of people in the world fully expect to spend $25,000 on a new vehicle and never once have to do maintenance or experience any sort of problem and that said vehicle will be as flawless at 750,000 miles as it was at 750 miles. There should never be a rattle, a squeak, an issue of any kind and if/when there is, the vehicle was a piece of **** and built with poor quality. The manufacturer of the vehicle should give them a full refund and a free new vehicle for the hassle.
The car companies love this mentality because it keeps people buying a new car every 5 years instead of fixing the damn things and keeping them.
At the end of the day, most people simply consider vehicles as transport and nothing more. This breeds contempt for all cars instead of fostering the driving experience and love of vehicles that we (the enthusiasts) still have.
Excuse me while I go bloody my knuckles working on my truck and loving doing it.
107k on my '07 and only had to fix the fuel level sensor at around 102k. Other than that, this truck has been trouble free and I don't mind spending the equivalent of a truck note on fixing something every 7 years.
I had a '98 Frontier that I sold in '07 to buy my current one that I bought with 110k on it and put about 40k hard miles (paid $3k for it and drove it like a $3k truck) in a couple of years. That thing cost me exactly $400 of maintenance while I owned it (tires and brakes). If I didn't get $2800 for it, I would have kept it and probably be driving it today.
That said, enjoy the BMW. My advice, well...more my dad's advice from dealing with my mom's when she had one, is to find you a trusted independent shop and take the owner out to a few dinners because you'll become good friends. I'd even suggest getting to know his kids so that "thank you" card you get when they graduate college isn't a huge surprise.
I have a 2012 frontier and the rear differential seal is leaking. Got it replaced by dealer under warranty and now it whines when decelerating or braking. Dealer is going to replace the entire rear differential/axils (one assembly).
As far as joining BMW forums, I would stay away from BMW. I had 2000 330ci and had too many issues to mention but most important issue to mention was the transmission reverse gear went at 70k. Common issue cost me 2k to fix and was never right afterwards. Got rid of it. Nice car and performed well, but too many problems. Window regulator, windshield wiper movement seized, gas gauge issue left me out of gas at intersection. They are hard to resist as they look really nice and perform well but not reliable after few years. Japanese is more reliable. Or if you have the cash try Porsche.
I agree with some of the other post regarding BMW. BMW will just give a whole new slew of issue at twice the price.
