Yeah, if you try to calibrate MPG after more than one fill up, it will mess up the calibration. You need to keep a running total and calibrate from that, or you have to do it on the first fill up.

So would it be safe to calibrate the distance multiple times to try and dial in the exact distance or no? Also, do you zero out the mpg average after each tank or leave it and let it keep a running average?
In the manual, there's a procedure for multiple trip calibrations. As for MPG, I've only calibrated it once and I don't zero it after each fill up.

Don't read the manual, unless you are looking for something specific. It's overwritten and makes the UG seem like it's difficult to use. I just winged it when I was doing initial setup, it was pretty easy to figure out. I only went to the manual to answer a couple of questions.
