Dropping the Headliner

So Im working on a field job in Pennsylvania and my work rented me a full size dodge pickup. Well on day two it gets a flat tire and we return it and entrerprise gives me a 08' Frontier SE 4X4 Crew Cab with like 50 miles on it. Its my exact same truck except its white. So I get to practice doing stuff on this rental before I do it on my own truck. I took off the dash in preparation for my head unit install (which unfortunately is still on backorder from Crutchfield). I want to drop the headliner tomorrow just to get a peak at whats under there before I install my thule rack here at the end of the month. I just have no idea how to do it.. has anyone ever done it and if so can you give me a quick rundown?

I guess Im looking for something to re-enforce the flare nuts on the thule rack and even if I dont find anything...Its a rental so why not... I only wish that something in my truck was messed up so I could swap with a piece from the rental but my truck is still in pretty good shape. Thanks.

I actually already did this when I had my headliner recovered...

The best thing to do is:

1: Take out both front seats completly, and the center console
2: there will be a lot of trim you need to remove to get the liner to drop freely (I believe the front piller is called the C pillar (both sides need to be removed), you also need to remove both front and rear seat belts that are bolted in and take out trim that is behind them.
3:You will need to take out all the "Oh Crap" handles
4:take off visors completly w/ mounts
5:Take out all lights that are mounted on the roof including the storage box
6:theres clips in the rear that need to be removed (the acces the 3rd brake light)

I believe everything is unscrewed now for the headliner to drop.

1) Once it drops there is a wire that goes from your driver C pillar and it routes to all your lights that you removed. The wire is actually glued onto the roof but you can unclip it from the C pillar
2:Once thats unclipped, you can start to pull the headliner down
3)You will need to angle the liner and have it fit out either the driver or passenger dooe (I took mine in and out the passenger side)

**I know it sounds like a lot and it is but its not that hard. It is time consuming. Dont go to fast getting it out because you could flex the cardboard that the liner is made out of and it can get a crease(sp?) in it.

"So I get to practice doing stuff on this rental before I do it on my own truck."

So your buddy borrows yours to move because his is in the shop and returns it with the interior put back together crooked. You're OK with that? Why not swap tires and wheels? Oh yeah - "I only wish that something in my truck was messed up so I could swap with a piece from the rental but my truck is still in pretty good shape." - you don't need tires and wheels. Maybe the rental has some ethics in the glove box. You certainly don't seem to have any of those laying around. What a fuktard...

Thanks PreRunnerCrew. That seems like it may be a little tricky but well see.

Sheepdriver, I'm not talking tires and wheels here bud, relax. I'm saying, if you had two frontiers in your driveway (one was yours and one was a rental) and yours had a F'd up floor mat on your passenger side, you wouldn't switch em?? Give me a break...

Umm no - actually I wouldn't. How is stealing a floor mat from a rental car different from wearing an old shirt into a store and swapping it in the changing room for a new one? They're both stealing aren't they? Maybe I'm missing something here so please use the wisdom of your youth and inform me...

I think sheepdriver is right and I agree with him. It is stealling. It is not legal period so I see no reason to do anything unless the vehichle is yours. No I would not do it either nor would I do anything to mess with someone elses property that could mess it up. In this case the company owns it so if you mess it up it will not just hurt you but the company to and possibly a couple of employees. You are the one that is messed up.

Not to rain on your parade, but it is because of renters like you that it now costs upwards of $50 a day to rent from Enterprise. I use to be able to score a rental from them for $19 a day.

OK. Ill admit that perhaps I was being a bit brazen. The fact of the matter is that I didn't take anything. I probably would not have had the balls even if I needed something. I did however remove the plastic casing around the stereo and then put it right back together. You may think thats messed up as well but picture this: Your doing a test to map bedrock fractures in a field in the middle of no-where. The test, once set up runs for 90 mins and their is nothing that you can do but wait. You just ordered a new Head unit and got instruction from CF on how to put it in. Its just you, a fronty and a leatherman......

And as for the price of rentals going up. Last year I spent over $19,000 on rentals for work (that I got reimbursed for). I really don't think Im hurting their buisness...
