Wink Drawing the line between "mod" and "upgrade"

This might be an idle question:

How do you define what is a mod and what is an upgrade? They could be both, right? Or even a mod that is a step down from stock quality.

I consider my Optima battery an upgrade and my topper an accessory. They are functional changes that don't require any other changes to the stock vehicle.

If I decide to add a leaf (for load-handling purposes, not for lift), that would be a mod, I suppose. But if I get Timkens instead, is that a mod?

Is an aftermarket stereo a mod?

What about purely cosmetic items, such as replacing black door handles with chrome ones?

Inquiring minds want to know if there is a standard definition as to what constitutes a mod.

I think they are one in the same, though a mod can have absolutely nothing to do with performance, where as an upgrade will typicaly net you something other than looks... but for the most part I think they are interchangeable.

Would a breast augmentation be considered a mod or an upgrade?

I would say they mean pretty much the same to me. Any
change you make to a vehicle would be a modification. An
upgrade would alter the stock vehicle so it would also be a modification.

You can upgrade your radio or seatcovers, etc. and it is the same, a modification which would not alter your performance.

In my mind an upgrade done by the dealer would not be considered a modification as it comes from the manufacturer with that configuration. What have I just said?

A mod should technically be free and considered altering a factory part (usually not able to mod it back?)

an Upgrade I would think would cost $$$ as well as be manufactured part.

I think a "mod" is something objective... anything you change has to be a mod.

An "upgrade" on the other hand, is totally subjective. Some people think GTR wings are upgrades... God help them.
