Any manual transmission will do exactly what you have described under the right circumstances. It doesn't need to be a particularly steep slope either, and won't harm the tranny in any way. This is no different than manually rotating the crankshaft, the way you would to get a particular piston to top dead center. It's also the way they used to crank start cars way back in the day, and start prop planes. It depends on which way the vehicle is facing as to whether 1st or reverse is the better gear to have it in, but either way it's always best to use the parking/E-brake. BTW, it's not one OR the other -- it's BOTH.

Smile Many Thanks

Thanks to those who replied to my post.
I should have considered the idea of the engine
turning backwards.
Still, I have driven standards all my life and this
is the first one I have seen in which such a small incline
was actually able to overpower the engine compression.

when you park it just place it in reverse or try another gear. I would never use the e brake on my other standard truck and would leave it in reverse. It is easier to pop the gear in first instead of reverse. Yet same thing happened to my sis in her truck while she parked it in first.

Whatever works for you is best, but I'm not sure that's healthy for the transmission letting stationary gears cog up and compress together as the truck rolls a small bit to rest. In fact, my wife's Subaru owner's manual strictly warns against doing this on the 5-Speed stick because it puts stress on the transmission. But, if it works for you, that's cool. Peace.
