It did say in the article that the Titan replacement would basically be a Dodge drivetrain and under pinnings with Nissan sheet metal. I have driven both the current Dodge Rams and the Nissan Titans and I have to day the Titan engine and tranny combo is wayyyyyy better than the Ram's. The Titan also has some nice features like extendable tow mirrors standard and the spray in bed liner and utilitrack system.

Hopefully the new Titan will still be unique enough to seperate it from the Ram pack. And hopefully Dodge can come out with a "true" 5 speed auto trannie and not one with 2 different 2nd gears!

Yes, drivetrain does appear to be shared at this point. Things are always subject to change, but I believe the last word was body designed by Nissan. And there will be limited Nissan people in-house for assembly similar to the Quest/Villager venture.

I, too, hope it stays unique. But, it's personal to me.

It's all about how to build your line up of vehicles as efficiently as possibly. GM wanted to do the same thing, but the business end did not work out. It is going to become more common to share manufacturing capacity in the future. It's going to be the only way the automotive industry can survive and stay profitable.

As far as Dodge goes, if I didn't work for Nissan and needed a full size truck, it would be a Dodge.

I'm not sure what to think of this. Nissan has always been it's own company (well Nissan and Renault) and now they are selling out to Chrysler? I hate that company. If you ask me, the powertrain on the dodge Ram had always been absolute sh!t. Their trannies are a complete pile of garbage.

There is a lot more cross company developments out there than many people realize. Nissan's hybrid Altima shares hybrid technology with Toyota. Nissan has also had joint ventures, overseas, with Suzuki prior to the recent Suzuki/Frontier deal.

Then you have Ford, GM, and Chrysler that have and have had many sharings with foreign manufacturers.

if you buy a titan after 2010, it will be a dodge. sheetmetal is cosmetic, the rest is what counts and dodge is garbage...a nissan built by dodge will also be garbage.

the hybrid system in the altima is crap too. I know someone who has one and last winter she got worse mileage than others we know who have regular altimas.

I understand that there are a lot of shared parts, usually with GM and Ford it's between brands that share the same owner, in this case however, it's more like the suzuki equator that nissan is building for them, dodge will be building this for nissan, in effect it will be a dodge ram with different sheetmetal. a wolf in any other clothes is still a wolf.

the suzuki will have nissan build quality, the titan will have dodge build quality (or lack thereof).

I'm glad I wont be in the market for a new truck for a long long time and when I am, it wont be anything that chrysler touches.

I think it's more that it's not economical for them to build it themselves. Have ot be able to sell so many units to justify keeping a line on a certain product and it sounds like they just arent selling enough.

That's probably true. Outside of North America the Titan doesn't sell much at all where as the Frontier/Navara has way larger volumes globally.

the titan is a nice truck but so many people swear by the tundra, the problems nissan had with the differentials and brakes on the 2004 models left a bad taste in some truck owners mouth, if nissan redesigned the titan and put in a more powerful and more fuel efficent engine they would probably sell more, only thing i see good out of the deal is that the titan will have a 381 hp hemi and possibly a HD version with a cummins.
