Question Cheap(er) way to get a spare key made?

Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get a spare key made than going to the dealer? I've called three dealers and they have quoted prices from $90 to $200. I went to a local locksmith and he quoted $60 but then couldn't get his laptop and software to communicate with the CPU on the truck. The dealer that quoted me $90 requires me to schedule an appointment M-F and I'm trying avoid taking any time off work to get this done or spend an arm and a leg....

Any suggestions?

Since the key has to be programmed to work with the truck you can't just go to Home Depot and make a spare. There is a way to bypass the chip in the key but I forget how exactly.

hmm chip bypass... I'll have to google around for that one.

I miss the days of the $1 hardware store spare...

I found a website that sold generic nissan chipped keys, local nissan programed it for like 40, took less than a half hour.

I work on the dark side. Diesels rule.

It seems they're charging more around here to do the programming of the key.

My 07 apparently isn't "chipped" so I have the key from Lowes as a spare in my wallet.

Are you looking for a full spare or just a 2nd key or a wallet key or what? The Lowes/Homies option will work for the doors and possibly the ignition. May be worth the buck to try.

I've gone in the dealership and told them I just need a key that will open the doors. They should do this for next to nothing, they did for me. Sometimes the unprogramed keys start the truck and sometimes they don't which in that case you just go to a different dealership and tell them it just stopped working. Also look in the owners manual and sometimes it will tell you how to program the keys...It does on some vehicles, I haven't looked.

just disable the transponder setup for the chipped keys. Then you can use any key you want.

^there was a recall for some 07'-08's for that.

OP you can always get a generic $2 key cut and see if it starts your truck if so, ya gotta cheap key.
Downside you know you don't have "chip" security.

I got a key cut at lunch today and tried it. It didn't work so I've scheduled an appointment at the dealer to get a key made. Thanks for all the good info guys, I appreciate it.
