Caliper Bracket Removal

What is the best way to get the nuts off the caliper bracket. I think they are 7/8 inch, but they won't budge and it's hard to put any weight on the ratchet when it's deep in the wheel well. I gotta replace my rotors and I gotta get the caliper bracket off. Should I buy a rubber mallet and take it to the wrench, or just get a hernia getting it the old fashioned way?

I believe they are 19mm, and you can use a 1/2" breaker bar, 1/2" air gun or a little heat from a torch

i'm actually using a breaker bar, but I don't have a 19mm socket, but the 7/8 goes on snug. It's on there tight, hasn't been removed for 50,000 miles. I was thinking about using liquid wrench deep penetration.

I got it, just had to position myself better and have my g/f help!

Mountaineer,

Every fastener on our vehicles (a virtually every vehicle made these days) is metric. If you are going to be doing work on your vehicles, do yourself a favor and go to Sears and pickup a set of Metric 6pt sockets - and ratchets if you do not have good ones. This time, your standard socket may have been close enough, but next time you may round off a bolt and then you will have created a major headache for yourself. You'll be able to buy a basic set for less than you saved by doing the brakes yourself - and they will last you a lifetime.

Also, for rusty bolts nothing is better than PB Blaster. You can buy it anywhere.

Yeah I found out it's 21mm, worked like a charm

Wow, your girl must be strong!

Good job breaking it loose. Nothing will pee on your parade worse then when you go to do a normal/simple job and run into a snag like that.

When ever I know how much time it should take me to do a job I always double it in my mind just for such things. Never know what you'll run into.

Then when I get a job done in half the time I initially predicted, I'm like "dang I'm gooooood!"
