Brake Controller and "Amp" Harness Question

Hi! I' just joined the club. I originally posted this question under a reply under another thread a couple of days ago. I didn't know if that was they right thing to do but after 3 days I figured I try a new thread. I just purchased a 2007 Frontier KC. It was not wired for towing. I have a 15 yr old Kelsey 81741 Electronic Brake Controller I bought new but never used it. It come with a 20amp self resetting circuit breaker. I've been doing some research on the 7 pin wiring harness. From Nissan Courtesy Parts I downloaded the installation instructions on a part number 999T8-D407P Reciever Hitch, Tow Harness Kit (7Pin) 2005-2007 Frontier. Now this kit is for hooking up the 7 pin connector harness at the bumper and adding the relay jumper and relays at the kick panel. Then according to the instructions "Power for operation of trailer brakes requires installation of additonal components: 1. Jumper harness Part Number 24167-A6000 2.Trailer brake controller unit- Available from most supply stores. Is this correct? If I understand what I'm reading my 20 amp breaker hooks to the appropiate B+ wire on the 24167-A6000 harness (which installs under the dash or cockpit as the instructions put it) along with the brake controller output. It looks like I don't have to run any wires to the battery or back to the 7 pin connector. I'm running power from battery to controller to the trailer using the factory truck wiring? Also, in the 7 pin wiring harness kit illustrations where it is talking about attaching the relay bundle to the bracket, the illustrations show a "with AMP" and a "without AMP" What is this AMP it is making reference to?

My 2008 did not have the tow package either. As part of the sale I had the dealer install the hitch and 7 pin harness. When I hooked up the brake controller it worked without any additional fuses or circuit breakers.

After installing the harness in your kit, you will not have to do any additional wiring at all. Just plug in the controller and you should be good to go. I believe that the 20 amp breaker would be only used in a vehicle that did not have any trailer wiring at all. Since our trucks were prewired for trailer brakes there should already be a breaker or fuse in line already - disclaimer -- I attempted to confirm this when I connected my controller by way of the wiring diagrams but I could not.

The jumper that you mentioned plugs into the connector that is under the dash near the steering wheel. I received one, I'm not sure if it came with the kit you ordered or not.

Lastly, brake controllers have come a long, long way in 15 years. I highly recommend buying something a bit more up to date
