Didnt take the fan off. 1 too many chunks out of my knuckles trying to break one single f'n bolt on the tensioner, got pissed off, put the new belt on and buttoned everything back up. Did manage to strip the bolt a little though, so that's nice. Done messing with it for the night. Maybe the new belt will make a difference. Wont know until tomorrow morning. Time for dinner and a beer or 7 to ease on down

I used my 14 and 15mm combination wrenches. Put the box end of the 14 on the bolt and hook the box end of the 15 on the open end of the 14. This puts the handle well above the radiator and gives you way more leverage. It was pretty tight but not that bad. I have an 05 with 40,000 miles.

If you guys are hearing a "ticking" / "tapping" noise on up hill ascents while the engine is under load, you're probably hearing spark plug knock. If you haven't changed the plugs and you have 80k+ miles, it's TIME.

Would that go away after the engine warms up though? It seems like a warm engine would make that worse.

I thought about that last night after I posted the previous response. It should become worse, but I don't know what the timing is like on a cold, vs warm on these engines. If the timing is advanced during a warm up, and retards a little after warm, then no it wouldn't get worse with a warm engine.

Another thing, could be the variable intake. Mine sometimes makes a "chatter" when it's cool ~115*-160* (On the bully dog). Once it's warm I don't hear it anymore. (`12 with 9400 miles)

I think I have the VAIS rattle you are talking about also. But the two sounds are distinct. I have a chatter that starts right at 2200RPM like this thread discribes:

Engine Rattle at 2200 RPM - SOLVED! - Second Generation Nissan Xterra Forums (2005+)

OP, any updates on the new belt?
