Um, no, its not the drive shaft. It is the serpentine belt and the tensioner. He said it happens on idle. If the drive shaft does not move on idle, how would it make noise?

I am 100% sure it is the serpentine belt and the tensioner. Just trust me. Try changing it and keep us updated.

Ok, took a half day at work, just picked up a belt and tensioner since from what ive read it seems to be not too complicated. As I said before, working under the hood of a car isnt really my forte so wish me luck. Will keep you guys posted. Appreciate the help

If this doesnt help I will start looking into the driveshaft. That repair sounds quite a bit above my paygrade though!

Lol, it is not the drive shaft! If the noise happens on idle, and the drive shaft does not move on idle, it is literally impossible for it to make noise!

Anyways, even if it were the drive shaft, which it is not mind you, you would only need to replace the U-joints, that make a "clicking" sound at low speeds, and you feel a vibration at higher speeds. U-joints cost $12.99 for the rears, $15.99 for the fronts, including lifetime warranty from Autozone or Pep Boys.

Just waiting for that "told you so" moment when you replace the Serpentine belt and the tensioner, especially for the people who keep crying "drive shaft", making me do numerous *facepalms*...

I have an 04 Frontier with 238,000 miles on it with a similar noise over the last couple of weeks. I like the description of a card in the spokes.

My belts have all been changed at some point or other, including the timing belt, but I don't know if the tensioner has ever been checked.

My mechanic thinks it's time to retire the truck, but I'm not willing to make that decision yet.

I think I have this same problem. The description of a baseball card in bike spokes is good, though mine is more muffled. I would describe it as a ticking or "whirring." But I doubt that helps explain it. I have been trying to figure out what it is for a long time.

It only happens for me when the truck is cold, and gets worse when the truck is under load. To the OP, does your noise get much louder when going up a hill or accelerating on an on ramp? It is tied to RPM, not to wheel speed. It is not extremely loud, but is definitely noticeable in the cab with the windows up.

I have done a ton of searching and find the closest description I could find was the problems that Titans were having with cracked manifolds. Do you guys think it could be a small exhaust leak that gets sealed up when the exhaust system warms up?

I wish I could figure this out, it sounds awful in the morning

BTW, I just had my timing chains done a couple hundred miles ago. The noise was present before and is present after.

How many miles are on your truck? What other services have you done to your truck except the timing chain replacement? Does it happen during the summer months as well as during winter? It could be a lot of things, but I need more info to help you on that one. A sound clip would be great also.

I have about 86K miles on my truck. Its an 06 SE 4x4. No other major services aside from some A/C repair work. Other than that just normal maintenance. I bought it used around 55k, so I am not entirely sure how well it was taken care of before that. It does happen during summer also. It happens whenever the engine is cold. On a normal day that means in the morning going to work and after work when it has been sitting all day. (sounds like the same with OP)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Yep, sounds like we are having the same problem. Wish I could post an update about the tensioner and belt, but I'm having EXTREME problems getting the bolt of the tensioner off. Socket wrench + socket is too thick to fit because of the fan. Went and bought a slim socket wrench...still too thick. Cant get enough pressure applied with a regular wrench to break loose. About to just put the new belt on and call it a day. Frustrating. Any suggestions before I pack it up for the night?

I think it's like a 12mm or 14 mm. I just used a wrench. Take the belt off before you start to pull the tensioner FYI.

But I think I just used some elbow grease and a regular wrench and presto
