ABS Self-test making clank noise

I have a 07 Frontier, 7k miles. When starting off, I hear a audible metallic clank coming from the front, about the time it shifts into second. I took in for service and was able to reproduce the noise for the service manager and technician and they agreed that it was not a normal noise. But after taking my truck into the shop, they then told me it was the ABS doing a self-test and that they could not do anything about it. The technician told me to give it more gas, so I wouldn't hear the noise. The service manager refused to enter it in the system that they couldn't fix the noise, in fact the ticket states that they couldn't reproduce the noise. Anyone else having this issue? I mean with the noise, not bad service.

The ABS self test is a normal sound. It should not be very loud though.

Out of my last 6 Nissans that perform this test my 2000 Frontier was the loudest. My current Frontier is quieter and my 2007 Pathfinder is audible. Go for a test drive in another truck to hear for yourself or find a member hear who lives nearby to hear yours and then drive with them to compare.
Once you are familiar with this sound you tend to not pay attention.

Thanks for the information. I did find in the owners manual that the ABS self-test will make a clunk noise, but this is a metallic clank and at 5am is pretty loud. So I'm stuck with a clanking truck. First truck I've owned that did this. I don't think I'll buy another Nissan.

You should hear the ABS self test on trucks with air brakes. It cycles each modulator when you start the engine or turn the ignition key to the run position. If you have something louder then a slight click/thump, there could be something else going on with your trucks. Mine doesn't self test until I get above 15 mph.

So, I'm impressed you at least researched before posting and found out it was the ABS self test.

....but I am confused why you are still upset? They all do it, some louder then others. My dads is way louder then mine. In fact, until I drove in his, I didn't understand what the big deal was. and it still isn't a big deal.

and I certainly think its laughable that a noise, which is to be expected, and everyone says is normal, would deter you from a another Nissan? I mean, sure, go buy a ranger, it wont make a clunk, but it also wont ride as well, tow as much, get as good gas mileage, be as tall, last as long, have as much power....you get my drift.

There should be a sticky note that covers the following:

- ABS noise
- How to disable the horn honk from the remote
- rust spots in the paint
- waves in the doors
- seat noise
- crooked front bumpers
- Is it ok to run 87 octane
- Discolored black door handles

Have I missed anything?

08, SE, CC, SWB, 2WD, AUTO, Silver

I assume the noise only does it one time when you first start the truck and drive it? If thats what it is there is nothing to sweat.

Now if it does it every time when starting off from a stop its something else.

You didnt specify in your original post so I think everyone assumes it does it 1x during your drive until you shut the truck off and drive again?

I had an Acura RL that made a buzzing sound for a few seconds every so often and was told it was the ABS calibrating. It was very worisome at first as I heard RL's suffered from ABS failure and that it was pretty common. And yes, the RL is Acura's flagship sedan and they make noises too.
