The BIG Tire Review Thread (2nd Gen)

List of the popular tires we like to try. With a bit of info, Pros, Cons, Picks and a link. Just like the lift FAQ thread.

**This thread will be a work in progress for a long time. I'll edit and add to it as often as I can.***

Stock Tires (from NissanUSA website):

XE:
P235/75R15 General Grabber all-season tires

Cons:

SE:

LE:

BF Goodrich (non-stock):

Review of them from another forum:
"So I now have about about 4000 miles on the tires and still really like them. This past weekend we ran Upper Woodpecker Mine trail here in AZ, which is comprised of some pretty technical rock crawling, and I have to say they did spectacular. I aired them down to 20 psi and they grabbed anything in their path. My only limitation on the trail was my suspension and lack of front down travel, which revealed it self in some of the more trivial situations. The tires are also really tough, as they took some pretty good side wall hits and drive off like champs. They seemed to not chunk as bad as I thought they would considering the size of lugs they have. We had to drive down a 7 mile mountain road after about 2 days of pretty good rain. This means some pretty good mud. The tires did exceptional well as should be expected from a mud tire. They cleaned with easy and I was surprised at the amount of traction I had while steering hard left or right. They are still more quiet than a typical mud tire. I still have not had a chance to really test them in any sand however and hope that I get the chance soon."
and after driving them in snow:
"I have now used the tires in some decent snow and ice. The tires did exceptional well. I was able to plow through about 12 inches of fresh and wet snow with ease. On the icy pavement they did better than I had expected them to do. Not as good as say a ice and snow passenger car tire but much better than my previous set of BFG ATs. I was able to steer, climb a small hill, and stop without too much slipping. They really excelled in the slushy mud I found in a few places on a Forrest Road. I did not air down for any part of this trip and never felt like I didn't have the traction needed. I was very comfortable the entire time driving the truck in the conditions."

Firestone:
Firestone MT
Mudyfronty05:
I've had them on since 2007 roughly 25k miles and I would buy another set in a heart beat. Easily the best MT I have ever owned to this point and I have owned a LOT of MT's.

sexy6chick:
These tires work great off-road, and they have worn quite well. They ride just fine on the road, not super loud. I drive Aaron's truck to and from work every day and have no complaints about the way they are on the road. The commute is 25ish miles each way and they have held up just fine, wearing normal and all. These tires tend to grip very well - which has caused some chunking of the lugs. That is the only con on these tires. That is the only time when driving on road that you notice them, as you can feel the missing lugs every now and then.

Pros-I now know why they call this the black ice tire, this winter we had several days of nothing but ice with up to 2in of accumulation and even though I live on some bad roads I never had a problem getting out. I only used 4wd to get up some of the bigger hills and even then I don't think I really NEEDED it, it was just a precaution.
Loose dirt, no problem. Mud, no problem. These are some of the stickiest tires I have owned.
I have also been through a lot of rain and flooding (this past year has been the wettest in history for Missouri) and never hydroplaned or even came close.
Cons-If you live on rock roads the tread does chunk pretty bad. The grip of the tire can really be felt through the steering wheel when going slow in a parking lot, you can feel the lugs pulling when you turn the tire.
The noise of the tire isn't bad compared to a lot of MT's on the market (I love the sound of a mud tire) but I know some people complain about it.

General (non-stock):

Goodyear:

Nitto:
Dura Grappler
Pros:Highway tire
Cons:
Nitto Tire - High Performance Tires for Car and Truck Enthusiasts

Dune Grappler
Pros: Off-road "Desert Terrain" tire
Cones:
Nitto Tire - High Performance Tires for Car and Truck Enthusiasts

Terra Grappler - Off-road "All Terrain" tire
scuba91ta:
They are decent in the snow, but as with any tire with a blocky tread they are not going to be great. Don't get me wrong - I've been through 2 winters on mine and they get me around plenty good in the snow and is a night and day difference from the stockers.
I only got 42k out of my stockers, i so far have put about 20k on this set of TG's and the wear has been very good! I'm not sure that they are even half worn, the tread depth is still very deep. They handle pretty good, and offroad they are a great compromise - They have done well for me in both sand and mud. Obviously they are not a mud tire but i really didn't have any issues through any mud with them. On the road they do sing a bit, but no worse than any other tire with an agressive pattern for the street.
Overall? I like them - they handle nice, ride nice, and offer a great on/off road compromise IMO.
Nitto Tire - High Performance Tires for Car and Truck Enthusiasts

Trail Grapplers:
Pros: Blend of Off-road ability and On-road quietness
Cons: $$$

Mud Grappler
Pros: Very Off-road "Extreme Terrain" and Mud tire
Cons:
Nitto Tire - High Performance Tires for Car and Truck Enthusiasts

Nitto Comparison Chart:

Procomp:

Cooper:
Cooper Tires. Don't Give Up A Thing. Ultra-High Performance, Passenger, Light Truck, SUV, Motorsport, Motorcycle and Commercial Tires

Discoverer H/T - Touring tire
Pros: Quiet, long wear, Mud and Snow rated
Cons: Basic look, not for off-road

Discoverer ATR - All Terrain Tire
Pros: Quiet, treadwear, winter traction, mud and snow rated, better off-road ability than H/T
Cons: Middle of scale off-road ability

Discoverer S/T - All Terrain and High Traction hybrid tire
Pros: Treadwear, good off-road ability, fairly good winter traction, mud and snow rated, agressive look
Cons: Less wet/dry pavement traction

Discoverer S/T-C - same as S/T with a cut/chip resistant compound
Pros: made of off-roading on sharp rocks and gravel, better off-road ability than standard S/T, mud and snow rated
Cons: not as good winter weather ability as S/T

Discoverer STT - Off-road Tire
Pros: High off-road rating, features rim falnge protector, agressive look
Cons: Not as quiet, middle of scale winter traction, NOT MUD AND SNOW RATED

Frontyfan - I am currently running Cooper STT MTs in 305/70/16. I love them! I paid just under $200 per tire (without mount and balance though). The place I bought them at said they are rated to 40k miles too. I like the look, very aggressive, but they ride smooth and aren't as loud as other MTs.

eglaisi - I have them in 265's. Awesome tire. Had them on since October I think. Awesome in everything I've thrown at them. I was a little worried about on road driving. I was surprised that they're nice and grippy even on wet pavement.

Didn't like the Rugged Streets on my NISMO.

Love the BFG MT KMs on my Jeep!

Should have waited on the KM2s for my truck, but had BFG ATs on my Jeep for 50K miles and decided to put them on my truck. Love em so far.

And the GoodYear Fortera TripleTread on my Wife's Pathfinder.

also for Goodyear, the Wrangler MTR's (had those on my truck but plenty of 2nd Gen's have them):

Before the SAS drove my truck back and forth to work on these tires. On road they are fine noise wise and don't wear out quickly. Off-road I have only wheeled with them 4 times or so, but they seem to do very well for rock crawling. Grip just fine and haven't had any lugs wear. I would buy another set of these tires in a heartbeat.

And now they have the KM2's! (obviously a 1st gen, but you get the idea)

Here they are on a 2nd Gen:

and here is his review of them from another forum:

The tires are also really tough, as they took some pretty good side wall hits and drive off like champs. I tore up a little of the black outter layer on the side walls but the first main (white) ply was completely undamaged. They also seemed to not chunk as bad as I thought they would considering the size of lugs they have, and I did use some wheel spin to get through a good number of obstacles. About a month ago while camping, we had to drive down a 7 mile mountain road through low valleys and meadows after about 2 days of pretty good rain. This means some pretty good mud. The tires did exceptional well as should be expected from a mud tire. They cleaned with easy and I was surprised at the amount of traction I had while steering hard left or right. Road noise has not changed at all yet and they are still more quiet than a typical mud tire. I still have not had a chance to really test them in any sand however and hope that I get the chance soon."

and after driving them in snow:
"I have now used the tires in some decent snow and ice. The tires did exceptional well. I was able to plow through about 12 inches of fresh and wet snow with ease. I was also able to find a paved street that was pretty icy for the specific reason of seeing how the tires would do. On the icy pavement they did better than I had expected them to do. Terra grapplers. IMO best bang for your buck AT tire. I do alot of desert 2wd driving, and with the suspension I'm usually well over 35mph in the trails. The BFG AT, even when aired down, got severly chewed up so I switched to the Nittos. They've held up absolutely great, not to mention they can usually be had for under $140 a tire(285/75/16 D-load). They are pretty quiet for an AT and never had a problem with the sidewalls. For me, they are the absolute most practical choice.

^^ agree, i've had the terra grapplers on my truck for 28k miles now and they still have plenty of tread left. they ride good, they are getting a tad louder than the stockers due to feathering that trucks inevitably do to this type of tire but they are still quiet. i got all 4 for $540 OTD which put them right about the same as the OEM size long trails which i hated. these are fantastic tires for people who are not into hardcore rock crawling and are looking for something that's good for on road use while still allowing them to get to campsites, trail riding and general off roading. i absolutely love them. my biggest con with them is that they are really heavy (not a bad thing for a truck tire really) so they drag the gas mileage down a tad but not enough to make me want to switch, i still get around 21mpg or so usually

i know it's been a while but i'm gonna make a follow up post to what i posted right above this. i've now got 71k miles on my truck (good god it goes by fast...) so i've had my TG's for 49k miles and they still have a good amount of tread left on them. i'm estimating i will need tires around 80k miles depending on how hard i drive it between now and then. they have gotten substantially louder and are feathered pretty bad now (hence the noise) but i still like them overall and recommend them to anyone thinking about getting an all terrain tire. i may get them again but most likely will go back to a road tire, hopefully the Mich LT/X
