Welcome to The Club. Get the sliders instead of the Nerf bars. That way the sliders don't get door dings but the other person's doors will get more than a door ding. You won't regret the choice.

I test drove both the 2009 Tacoma TRD Off-Road (I had the 05 version) and 2009 Pro-4X Frontier...both crew cabs. I knew that Tacoma inside-out, so it was easy to spot the differences between the Frontier and Tacoma.

Without going into which one looks better (which is very subjective and I like the look of both obviously), here is are a few differences that I noticed:

The Tacoma tailgate is very "flimsy" and the Frontier tailgate can be locked. The interior of the Pro-4X (with Value Package) comes with a lot more options than the Tacoma for a similar amount of money, such as leather seats, electric seats, heated seats, heated mirrors, rear-window defrost (Tacoma has a slider that I never used because I could never reach it), great sound system, bluetooth, XM,... The new Tacomas do have XM and Bluetooth as an option...a very expensive option. The Tacoma does now have a little tailgate camera for backing up. The Tacoma now has side-curtain airbags standard and a switch to turn them off for off-roading in the TRD Off-Road model. The off-road Tacoma does have VSC, something called ATRAC (something like trac control), hill assist,...that can be turned on or off. I didn't quite see that in the Pro-4X....might be an extra option The Tacoma seems to have more room for rear-passengers and more comfortable rear seats. It's also easier to get in the rear passenger area in a Tacoma (larger doors). The Frontier has disk brakes all-around. Tacoma has rear drums. Engine power might be higher on the Frontier, but I can't say that it felt stronger driving it around. The Pro-4X suspension seems to be stiffer and I like that. I don't like to bounce around. The Tacoma doesn't have many illuminated controls. One gets to know where things are, but Nissan did a great job adding lights too the controls...looks very good. Ground clearance is better on the Tacoma. The paint is cheap on Tacomas. Just go to any Tacoma forum and you will quickly see how many people have had problems. I was one of the lucky ones. It depends on the color and I just happened to have a black Tacoma that was not affected by some of the problems others have had. The frame on my Tacoma had quite a bit of rust on it for it's age.

So these are the biggest differences that I did notice just by test driving and reading. I don't have my 2009 Pro-4X yet, but I am sure that there are many more differences that I will discover as I go along.

Here are a few picks of my 2009 Pro-4X. Having been an owner of a 2005 Tacoma TRD double cab, I have to admit that this new truck is pretty darn "sweet" so far.
