Well Tofino in the winter will definitely give you the rougher weather, but work over the winter could be hard to come by. It's becoming quite the tourist destination so if you're okay with lots of visitors it is pretty nice. Apparently Nanaimo is having a bit of a boom, although how long that will last is anyone's guess.
It doesn't really get terribly hot on the east side, no more than the low 30's and then only briefly in August usually. Summer was a little late arriving this year, 2nd week of July but then stuck around until 2nd week of October with virtually no rain for 2 months and mid 20s to low 30s throughout. Camping was this year.

COMOX!!!!hahaha rad im in courtenay !!! small world ,
lived in ucluelet for 7 years, its sweet out there if you work in hospitality , and love surfing , winters are fun the first year , and boring after that , work is slim , for sure , but you cant beat the small town life , tofino is cliquey as hell , but with time it gets better , i grew up in nanaimo , its a great central place to get to know the island , and work is easier to get , ultimately that depends on what u do for a living ...
if u have any questions about either place id be happy to help out though

oh and tofino doesnt really get a summer, per say anywhere near as nice as nanaimo , as we locals call it , "fogust" if you want summer on the west coast youll find yourself spending a lot of time at kennedy lake to get and decent amount of sun , LOL

This is exactly why i plan on moving to the island! Such friendly folk! Canada in general is awesome, but i just love that island. I been there for part of "fogust". I dont think i'll ever hate rain. Its in my newfie blood. Lol.

I plan on doing some recon into the island this spring (may-june). Could probably use some guidance. We should do a ClubFrontier meet and blast down some of them decommissioned logging roads!

The snow here is getting good. And its not to cold yet. I can still work outside, which is good. I got a neat outside job this winter! *Hotel Macdonald* Protecting Icicles from blasting through paving slabs and roof structure! Pretty cool!

I've got my back road map book and it is well used. Some of the decom roads are really not passable, great big chunks dug out. Some are gated because airheads go in a vandalize logging equipment or just generally leave a big mess.
There are plenty north of Campbell River that lead to nice forestry camp sites, we drag the 25 year old C-class RV into them so pretty easy in the 4X4. At least once we're settled in a camp site we can take the 4X4s exploring.
