Rear Differential / Axle Problems?

Ok, so I was just at the dealership so they could reseal the diff cover plate. That sure looks like some gray RTV to me! NOT! Anyways, I sure that'll be fine but I've now noticed that there may be an axle seal leak. See pictures and let me know what you think.

Thanks

Oh and to all, I basically just wondering if that leak on the end of the axle could in any way be residual from the work they did replacing the diff cover and internal fluid. My own thought is that the gear oil is at a higher level now so it is leaking out the end but idk. Probably will clean it off good and see if/how fast it comes back. Either way I see a trip back to the dealer in my future.

I would imagine it would be gear oil from a failed seal rather then brake fluid. It looks like you will be going back soon and make sure you mention the Gray RTV and not red, lol.

Also, after they fix it, make sure you do the axle vent mod to prevent the build-up of pressure. Pressure build-up is what helped cause the axle seal failure. Maybe even try to talk them into a Titan diff cover to help keep temps low and thus the pressure will stay low.

I would not call that a leak.

That sounds just dandy, and exactly like what my local dealer will tell me!

I am planning on cleaning it off and seeing how fast the residue comes back...then I will likley be going back to the dealer.

I know it's not brake fluid. Also, service manager will likely tell me there's no difference between red and gray. Apparently they don't read the Nissan Service Manual for recommended RTV.

I will search the forums for the vent mod. Hadn't heard of such a thing till just now. Also, there's absolutely no way my local dealer will spring for the titan diff cover. I had seen a kit for just under $200 online tho.

I would assume it is only a seal. Check your breather and see if it has fluid around it. If the diff was filled too much the residual would come out of the top. Take it from someone who put $2500.00 into a new diff at 62K. Man was I pissed.

But try the axle seals first to make sure, hopefully 60K powertrain will cover any cost for you...

good luck
