Hey guys i hear these 1998 frontiers have rear axle issues. Mine has a leak under the leaf spring, which is also broken lol. I hear they have axle seal issues but the leak is not by the flange. I was told by a mechanic i could have a cracked axle tube or a pin hole. But i'm wondering if when the seal goes does it leak under the spring pack as an indicator, kinda how water pumps work.
Also if it is the axle tube, could i just swap in another axle assembly from a xtrerra or pathfinder? I cannot find any other frontiers in the junkyard here in Ontario Canada what axle are swapable? Thanks
If his main leaf is broke, the only thing locating the axle is the little clamps holding the main leaf to the sub leafs. Common sense will tell you that.
So how exactly is traveling at highway speeds when the rear axle suddenly lets loose NOT going to injure or kill someone?
Looks like the axle housing has rusted through causing it to leak. There isn't any other reason how it could leak at that spot. You're gonna end up replacing the complete rear axle assy to fix this.
yaaaaah I just confirmed exactly what you guys where saying. Axle is ****en rusted though so i'm just gonna weld a plug.
Going to install the new leaf spring (STANDENS for $200cdn made in Canada) Which btw is a royal pain in the rusty seized ***. Every ****en bolt needed heat then the shackle bolts where ****en seized in the ****en bushings! Going to give it another go, after getting into a zen mode and getting more beer and stronger buddy who also has beer. woooosau
As far as driving it i never knew it was broken till i got home after a 400km road trip with 1000lbs in the bed, felt fine lol. Also going to look for a new axle anyways because that drum is seized on haard, and knowing my luck with this truck the axle seal will go!
These Toronto roads have more salt then the Bonneville salt flats. Can't really expect much from a $700 truck Canadian truck. Never thought leaf springs would be so expensive and troublesome. Next truck i'm getting i'm 3 linking it. Seems like this is a big problem with these trucks. Dam shame, good truck! Thanks for the help. Looking into that isuzu dana 30 swap. Then ask Rob Ford to ban salt on the roads
BTW i attached a picture of the bed that the truck came with for a SALTY laugh. I strapped on the mint hardbody box on top of that shitty box and drove to a shop, must have looked like some kind of ******* that day lol.
So i finally fixed it on my driveway. Very labour intensive. Surprisingly fidely lining up the spring bolt with axle perch and that plate under the axle. used JBweld quik on the leak, which was on the topside of the axle perch. All is good now
