as a few of you know, im am now currently going to straight axle swap my truck. i have looked at the clmini kit but i want to do a leaf sprung set up so that is out of the question(so is the 2000 price tag). i have been doing alot of the research over the past coup;le months and am finally commiting. most of my help has come from yotatech, and a few members on here. i know my way around a shop pretty good so i feel pretty cofident in doing this. my plan is to do a tried and true leaf spring front suspension.
im going to purchase this front leaf hanger kit from All Pro off road(http://allprooffroad.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=81).
i found a D44 wagoneer axle off of an 88. i am told this axle is not good to use due to a vacuum actuated disconnect. i have looked to see what it is and its function but have found nothing. if anyone knows feel free to tell me.
another concern i have is steering. i will prob end up using the steering off of a donor vehicle but am not to familiar with how they work. i will post more info about that once i get that far however. thanks for all the help(especially HKYStormFront!), im defintely going to need it shortly.
Our trucks come with IFS (independant front suspension) It is good to give you a smooth ride. You can do it long travel and it what desert racers use, or most of them use. but only one wheel has to move.. SAS is a Solid Axel Swap. what this does is helps the truck in off camber situation, and give the axel more articulation. with a sas you can flex more and keep all 4wheels in contact with the ground.
thanks for the link silversuper. i was reading alot about axle witdh but to me that is not a concern(only the diff position). as when the front axle is the rear axle will be the next project. i have a budget in my head of about 1500 for this swap, so a currie axle is not going to be considered. alot of you might say thats low but i plan to do alot of this myself. the only purchase maiunnly will be the hanger kit and the axle itself. yotatech has a whole section for swaps and i have been consulting them for a while now.
1st and 4th llinks are great. if anyone has any questions about swapping their trucks or anything in general feel free to post them in here.
im mainly doing this swap to get rid of cv axles up front(not that i have any to begin with) a straight axle is much stronger than ifs. i also thnk it would be an awesome project to do as long as its done right. i really dont need the flex, especially in florida, thats why im just gonna do it with leafs.
If it was VAC disconnect it would have a pump on the diff cover/housing.. If would not have one if it was NON VAC disconnect.. No particular year had them soley.. They made some VAC and some not in the mid to late 80s.. All 80s to 90 waggy axles are DSD(driverside drop). You will lose some of your steering radius as well as it will be about 2-3 inches narrower in the front.. Lemme know if you have any more questions about axles or swaps and I can help you out..
Do you have any particular off road shop helping you? I know Ted from Aggressive really well and He SAS'd a Pathfinder a few years ago. His shop is off 210 and he would be a great wealth of knowlege for a custom set up. He also has several Yota's on the side and some extra parts, I'm sure.
a real truck is built not bought, the only shop doing this is No Limit 4x4 and thats because its my shop. but i i wouldnt mind going there and checking some things out and asking a couple questions of course. ive never done this and want to have as much info as i can once i begin. im more looking for a donor truck rather than an axle that way i can use the steering off of it also. thanks for the help man, where exactly on 210 is his shop? i know ive seen his trucks at lawtey before. hes got that old blue ranger on ground hawgs right?
Where is your shop? Do you still work at Tires Plus? I figured you would do most of the work but I didn't know if you were getting help from one of the big off road guys in town.
Not sure if that is his or if he still owns it. He has a old '86-ish yota on 44 Claws and a Beast of a T100 w/ 2.5ton Military Axles. He is down 210 in those warehouse garages past Crackers BBQ on the right.
yeah i know who your talking about, i still cant belive that truck is on stock running gear and motor. our shop is my back yard. we jusy put in a 9 foot gate so we can get trucks back there and everything. no limit 4x4 is a club a few of my friends and i started years ago, its gotten pretty big now. weve got about 150 members from here to NC. if you need parts hit us up, weve got a commercial account at advace so we get everything cheap. no more tires plus, i lost my liscence so i couldnt work there anymore, but in 2 weeks ill prob be there again. thanks man!
i just checked out their site, i didnt realize how much they did with nissan and toyota, i figured it was like all the other shops here that are detroit based mainly
yeah i saw that, a 22re pushing 44's thats insane, my friends struggles with 33's. but that truck is sweet. i might call up there tomorrow or some time this week. but i want be able to go up till the 16th anyways. thanks for being so helpful everyone!
leafs will be easier and simple-r to do, however, stay away from waggy front leafs, they don't flex worth crap, might wanna research a nice set of 2-4" lift spring packs for YJ wranglers (86-95 i think). they will flex 10x more. you will need good shocks for this setup...

coil overs for me are not needed for the type of wheeling i do. if i needed it i would be happy to do it but there is no reason i can think of as to why i would need it. in florida we mudbogg, we dont have rocks and mountains to climb. if i can finnd a wagoneer axle for a good price, i might consider the calmini kit still. but i really dont need it.
on another note, ive been looking around and found a guy with an 84 chevy pickup, it doesnt have a motor or tans in it but its got front and rear axles. he onlys wants 600 for it. this weekend i will be going to take a look at it and see. than ill have full size running gear!

Your right offroad it may be a little over-kill. However on the road it will still drive good buch better then leaf springs.
I was just pointing that out because I wish i did it, not just for rock crawling, but I drove it around town alone and on long trips. the leaf-spring in the front makes it so harsh on the road...
I am sure whatever witch way you go you are going to love it much better then IFS
thats true, i didnt really think about on road performance. i might go that route. the hardest part will be getting the same axel required for that kit. cause im sure not about to do a custom coil over on my truck yet. while i was doing my research, your 4runner was one of the things i looked at, so thanks man!

Hey mud how much are you looking to spend on an axle. I have a line on a late 80's grand wagoneer axle(d44) for $500. Let me know if you want it. I dont have the time or money right now to do the SAS on my truck.
does that axle have the vacuum actuated disconnect or not? if not, id be interested, that way i could go calmini. i got 200 cash now, ill have a job here soon so then i can start piecing things together quicker
