i think its funny people automatically say a 2wd should go down when i myself have a lifted very off road capable 2wd that has probably done a lot more then most 4x4's will do in their lifetime. It all depends on what fits your style and what you want to do with your truck. i have two other vehicles for on road driving and playing with. And for what i do off road my 2wd frontier does what i need it to do.
yes, a 2wd can be very capable offroad...depending on the driver. there is no need for 4wd if you are sticking to prerunning, but if you are sticking to the rocks then 4wd is a must. you might be able to do alot in 2wd but there will be a point where you either go home or ride shotgun in a 4wd
but as long as your truck does what you need it to then it's the way it sould be

I like 'em moderately lifted or moderately lowered.. but the layin' frame thing is not for me.
I'm with you...stock is boring. But a little lowering or lifting definitly helps. The choice of which to do would be best answered by what you plan on using the truck for.
Having owned a lowered Isuzu before I'm a little biased towards lowered trucks...but being able to rip through deep water or off-road trails rocks too...
