if you have a mnaual its a parking brake, if you have an auto its an e brake

I call it an emergency break, but obviously use it for parking.
I use it most of the time I park unless the spot is perfectly flat. Its not that I think the truck is going to roll away, but I'd rather the brakes hold the truck in place than the transmission. I hate when you put it in park then let go of the brake and you can feel the truck roll until the trans. catches it... that can't be good for it.

What do you guys think of this....

Older vehicles with large rear drum brakes that had a small wheel cylinder to operate the rear brakes in the case of an emergency. Since this wheel cylinder operated the same brake shoes as the regular brakes it was a substantial brake thus capable of stopping the vehicle in an emergency and thus an "emergency" brake.

Newer vehicles with rear disc brakes have an integrated smaller drum-type brake which doesn't have nearly the brake effectiveness as the disc portion and thereby relagated dutes to hold the vehicle in place and thus a "parking" brake.
