it be my m-r-g brake. But I use it to park....hmmm. I also think it determines if you drive a manual or automatic.

If you just stopped for some Starbucks, it's a parking brake.
If there's a big open wet spot on a corner where your friends are hanging out, it's an E-brake.
if a kid chases a ball into the street right in front of you, it's an emergency brake.
If you are on a hot date, it is in the way.

Imagine if it wasn't there. There would be a large gap, and that would be uncomfortable as your @ss or whatever body part would be dropping into the gap. So I like to see it as an @ss support and not in the way.

That is only if it is not in use which could be a costly mistake with a manual trans. Let's say you are parked on a gentle slope. You start to get your mack on and realize the brake handle is cramping your game, so you dissengage it to clear access to your partner. In the heat of passion the shift lever is kicked or nudged out of gear and the two of you are rolling along totally unaware until you suddenly crash into something.

Generation gap!
Her Dad most likely instilled this into her because setting the parking brakes on older cars would keep the rear drum brakes adjusted. Newer cars with drum brakes have self-adjusters.

Does it really matter? parking or emergency....they both work to prevent the truck from moving....

Just call it the hand brake....that way it covers both fields...

Except in first gens, its either foot actuated, or the weird pull pole thing. so its cant be called a hand brake

Parking brake. My theory is that if you drive for a while giving time for the rotors to heat up and then you apply the E-brake then the spot where the pads make contact with the rotors is going to cool down slower. Now, you have warped rotors!
