My wife wrecked her GSXR

On 5/27/2007 my wife and I brought home her brand new 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600. Yup, she's a nut. I ride an 08 Kawasaki Concours 1400. Had to upgrade from my Honda ST1300 becasue I couldn't keep up with her anymore.

I have been riding off and on my whole life. She learned how to ride 3 years ago. I took her to a Motorcycle safety foundation course. She soon got her first bike (a 2006 Kawasaki Nija 650). Apparently it wasn't fast enough and she upgraded to the GSXR. Talk about fast!

Honey, open your eyes for the picture....

Of course, I get on this thing and it feels like a pocket bike!

On June 14, 2008 Peggy (my wife) went on a ride with a friend. She was going through an S-turn in an unfamiliar part of town. She made it through the first part of the S-turn okay but realized she was going too fast to complete the second part of the turn. She hit her brakes, panicked, and locked up the rear brake. She skidded across 3 lanes and crashed into a cement baricade wall on the side of the road, almost at a 90 degree angle. She is guessing she was doing about 55-60 when she hit her brakes. No telling how fast she was still going when she hit the wall. Her bike bounced off the wall after sandwiching her right side between the bike and the wall.

She broke her right femur in 3 places and now has a steel rod in the middle of her bone from the knee up to the top of the thigh. Her lower leg was broken in several places and is now held together by plates and screws.

Her right foot was completely torn off with the exception of the achilles tendon. The bones stayed on the foot, but all the soft tissue ripped off. It left her with no flesh from the top of her right foot to about 4 inches up her right shin.

She had 3 surgeries in 3 days. The best plastic surgeon and orthopedic specialist were on her case due to the sever nature of the injury.

They were able to save her foot from amputation but do not know how much use she will have of the right foot in the future. They had to remove an entire muscle from her back (lats) and sew it on the top of her foot and shin to cover the huge open exposed area.

Then they took a large skin flap from her upper thigh to place over the new muscle on her leg.

Apparentley all the ligiments and tendons in her foot were destroyed with all the soft tissue damage.

She swore to never ride the motorcycle again. Not because she hates it, because she know how quickly things can go wrong.

Now the accident was over 2 months ago. She just got all this hardware off her foot last week and has a walking cast now. She is only able to put about 20 lbs of weight on this foot. The doctors say it will be another 4-6 months before she can walk without assistance, if at all.

As she is recovering and feeling better she is seeing motorcycles riding around the area and starting to get the bug to ride her bike again.

My question for this poll is:

Should she try to "get back on the horse" and attempt to ride again?

Or...

Should she count her lucky stars and stick to 4 wheels from now on?

I don't think anyone on here is going to be able to give you the answer to this question. Some people need that "get back on the horse" in order to get over a traumatic event like this. Other (myself included) will take this kind of things as a sign that they shouldn't be pushing their luck.

I think this is a personal decision that you two must make together.

I say give it up. I use to ride many years ago. When I moved to the gulf coast in 1988, I gave it up. The way people drive around here takes away from the enjoyment factor. You can never really relax and enjoy the ride because it might be your last one. I hope she can get back to normal after her physical therapy. I was involved in one wreck when I was a passenger on another bike. That didn't stop me from riding though. By the way, your wife is some kind of fine.

I got in a wreck on my dirtbike (head on with a 4wheeler around a blind corner in the woods). I did a front flip over the bars and flew through the air. I was pretty banged up, but my helmet saved me. At first, I was thinking about never riding again, but then I got back on it about a month later, and am a better, more cautious rider because of it.

First I am sorry to hear about this accident and hope all is well with your wife. I am sure you will get a bunch of different thoughts on this subject. But like others have said this is really a choice that should be made by you two alone.

Personally when I laid down my bike I had a Honda Cruiser and it was no where near as serious as your wifes accident but I choose not to ride anymore because of the way other people drive. and I feel much safer with steel around me. But Dirtbikes is another story I will ride them all day long but only offroad.
