Update to VQ40 on lpg.

Did a ring around in Perth today. All gas fitters will do a conversion, sequential injection, but all have said to replace the factory cats for some after market metal types. They say the factory ones are very weak and with the extra heat generated thru the exhaust on lpg they can let go and push fragments back into the pistons causing engine failure. Unless I change them they will not provide a full warranty.

Also will use between 10-20% more lpg(closer to 10% on sequential), so add the extra for the exhaust plus lpg conversion you have to recalculate the overall savings.

Average cost for the conversion was $4600 + up to $1000 to replace the cats(expensive as old ones need to be cut out as up near manifolds and new ones welded in with cat pipes and flanges).

Rebates are $2000 Federal + $1000 State(for private registered vehicles only)

I think I will wait for a tuner to do the VQ40 and check the results, I'd rather have a little extra power and better fuel economy.

Anyone else have more information on this.

We did some research and Nissan tried putting Gas on the V6 and it blew up repeatedly
hence there would be zero warranty from Nissan if you put on Gas and it throws a leg outa bed .
What sorta economy do you get from your 4x2?
I usually get an average of 13 per tank round town .

At the moment probably about 15-16 but that's because all my trips are only a couple km. Mines an A5 as well, I can feel the auto being part of the problem. I noticed the fuel usage on short trips jumps way up, as soon as you get some constant speed over longer trips(even if around town) happening it drops sharply. Did 50km trip around town yesterday and the scan gauge is showing 13.3.

To be honest my VZ commodore 5.7lt V8 was way more economical even with 240kw at the wheels, easily got 13 around town.

These D40 are run so rich and tons too much timing, we need a mail order tuner here in Oz to make them an even better truck. They can alter the auto shift points as well.

Yes I agree that they are tuned fairly fat but then thats how they make sure they reach the end of warranty

I looked at VoGas but at $3500 with the govt rebate and VoGas recomended 20/80 gas/petrol mix the numbers did not add up.

Gas is 70c a litre and you use about 40% more so that is about $1, with petrol at $1.50 20% = 30c a litre so you are spending $3500 to save 20c a litre.

Plus in you add insurance (about $300 per annum) to cover just in case the engine does blow, you would have to use 1000 litres just to cover the cost of the insurance.

I get about 17-18LHK round town and 13-14 on a trip. The big tyres and auto do not help. I see a tuner as the only option but even then what what I have read the improvement is only going to be minimal.

BTW, I did the numbers the other day with a mate who has a diesel and with diesel price increasing it is line ball which is cheaper to run, add the $2000 extra you pay for the diesel and the petrol comes out ahead.

So the moral of the story is, we have trucks that go like hell and weigh 2 ton, tow 3 ton, so economy is a four letter word.

Cheers

It would pay to check the differnce in the price of Diesel v Petrol in your area and then would out how many kms you do a year. It may be cheaper to buy the V6 particually when you add the $2000 extra for and what ever it cost to go to D-Gas.

Cheers

It's really doing my head in trying to decide. Work pays for my petrol so i should probably get the petrol model. It will work out cheaper for me in terms of cost of the car and servicing. I suppose i thought about the diesel for the range and if i ever do some outback touring.

Ok maybe I can help out
I did the math when i did my purchase.
At that stage there was 20c/liter diff and they say that on average I would do 14k per year.
On purchase price alone it would take 8 years for the economy saving to kick in. However the servicing for the diesel is dearer that the petrol as far as I know
