D40 transfer box wine during warranty

I have a 4 year old petrol D40 which has developed a whine in low range.
I have done 80,000k and it is under a 5 year warranty.
I took it to Nissan to have it checked and they agree it has whine but Nissan Australia told the service dept that I would have to pay to have the transfer case removed and dismantled for inspection. If it is a manufacturing defect Nissan will pay but if they deem it is normal ware then I have to pay.

Is this normal?
Is gear whine normal in low range after 80,000k.
I have only used low range a few times so I have no experience with what to expect?

every 4wd i've ever driven has a whine of some sort in 4-low.
Must be the case for these Nissan transfer cases. Mine definitely does it and it sounds like it's supposed to sound that way. My last three 4wd vehicles were Isuzu and those didn't whine in 4-low, even after upgrading to TeraLow gears. Not too worried about mine, but I know the Isuzu guys are going to comment on our next off road group run.
