2nd Clutch Failed!

Hello, I just had my clutch replaced approx 6 weeks ago and this genuine Nissan clutch has just failed...................

My friend was using my 4wd on one of those bash trips.........and they are currently on Fraswer Island in Qld...........when the clutch went............

I have just called him to get the news that this clutch went the 1st time he used it in the sand!!

I had 35/40,000 odd k`s on the original clutch..........................

Can anyone advise on an aftermarket clutch kit for me to fit to this Nissan...

have been told our clutches are less that great. I heard of one guy frying his at 7000kms.
Apparently its a throw away flywheel as they cant be machined for some reason and i think I heard someone say it was somethong like $4000 for the new kit. However I heard some people are hitting up nissan for replacements under warranty especially with the diesels.Might be worth investigating.

Just did some research and it looks like the Diesel and the Petrol run different fly wheels too

Just found this on the web................

Xtreme Clutch - All Australian Clutches

Does anyone here know if they are ok?

Advertising states replace flywheel and clutch...............

Ozroder

My son in law got his friend to fit a genuine clutch kit that they got for 1600....which was a great price.........................just parts trade only.....and his friend fit the clutch kit.................

So no going back to Nissan this time.........................unfortunately........

I will try the extreme brake kit as they will supply a solid flywheel this time.........I will get price next week to supply and fit.....then hopefully this problem will disappear for ever........

I will advise part numbers etc..................after I get it in and try the clutch out myself.....

I would be hitting Nissan up under warranty
they cant very well say your doing anything wrong seeing they advertise the truck being able to pull its heart out and go anywhere. Make them pay for it .

Hi Aussie...........tough to do from Nigeria.................

My son in law got his friend to fit a genuine one thinking he was doing me a favour......................and he was.

I wanted to get an aftermarket clutch kit and get his friend to fit this...........I actually came onto the forum and asked back then about aftermarket clutches but he was too quick...........

No interest in fitting another genuine one to have it go down again...........just cant afford to be stuck in the Simpson etc...........when I only get 14 days in Oz each trip.

Thanks anyway, Ozroder

I've been dealing with Adelaide Clutch Services (Xtreme) for years now, they know their stuff and have been very good to deal with. A clutch failure in 7 weeks, I'd be pushing hard for a claim on a maunfacturing fault, however given that nissan only supplied the clutch I can't see them coughing up for labour.

I would want to find out some information about the crank before replacing a dual mass flywheel with a solid one, is it designed to have a single mass flywheel on it? A compromise may be to stick with the proper flywheel and use a carbon friction disc?

I'll try and have a chat with ACS for you as I've got to head down to the wingfield area, I also want to check out the LS1 edit place. Unfortunately I have been trying to do it for a couple of weeks now .

Ok so am gfunna show my ignorance here. What exactly is a dual mass flywheel. What exactly is it meant to do differant than the old solid lump type flywheel?
Now correct me if am wrong but I used to fry clutch plates all the time for one reason or another however it never trashed the flywheel . Now what has changed so that when we have a clutch plate failure its destroying the flywheel beyond machining?

Anyone got any pics of our clutch?

just a little research

Dual mass flywheels

Summary
The dual mass flywheel eliminates excessive transmission gear rattle, reduces gear change/shift effort, and increases fuel economy. The function of the dual mass flywheels is to isolate torsion crankshaft spikes created by diesel engines with high compression ratios.

The dual mass flywheel, or DMF, eliminates excessive transmission gear rattle, reduces gear change/shift effort, and increases fuel economy.

There are two basic types of Dual Mass Flywheels. The first is made up of a primary and secondary flywheel with a series of torsion springs and cushions.

There is a friction ring located between the inner and outer flywheel that allows the inner and outer flywheel to slip. This feature is designed to alleviate any damage to the transmission when torque loads exceed the vehicle rating of the transmission. The friction ring is the weak spot in the system and can wear out if excessive engine torque loads are applied through it. The system also has a center support bearing that carries the load between the inner and outer flywheel, and is fitted with damper springs to absorb shocks.

The second type of DMF incorporates planetary gearing. It is designed for engines with stronger vibrations in the lower RPM range. As well as greater driving and shifting comfort, the planetary DMF provides the benefit of lower fuel consumption because the idling RPM is lower.

Dual mass flywheels are fitted to light-duty diesel trucks with standard manual transmissions and, and to higher performance luxury vehicles to dampen vibration in the drive train. This also allows vehicles to be operated for longer periods without long term damage.

Transmissions in light-duty diesel powered trucks have a heightened sensitivity to fluctuating torsional inputs. This results in a strong torsional resonance or vibration that occurs during operation of the vehicle within normal driving ranges.

The function of the dual mass flywheels is to isolate torsion crankshaft spikes created by diesel engines with high compression ratios. By eliminating the torsion spikes, the system eliminates any potential damage to the transmission gear teeth. If the dual mass flywheel was not used, the torsional frequencies could damage to the transmission.

The dual mass flywheel construction relocates the damper from the driven disc to the engine flywheel. This repositioning dampens engine torsional vibrations more than is possible with standard clutch disc dampening technology.

Dual mass flywheels are designed to provide maximum isolation of the frequency below the engine's operating RPM, usually between 200-400 RPM. They are also most effective during engine startup and shutdown.
