I saw white dry on bottom of guard under engine and I had to add a quart of coolant. I guessed that water pump is leaking so I drove around a bit to find leak when engine was hot. Coolant level must've got low, because needle started moving up above normal temp. Stopped at garage immediately and saw a bit of steamy smoke coming from fan pulley where pump is. can't tell if it's leaking through weep hole or somewhere else, but no coolant coming from anywhere else.
You should not need a timing chain replacement. Like I said earlier, I had 165,000 miles on my 4 banger with the original water pump. The chains are really durable unless they changed something in the later 2.4 liter engines. The water pump is really easy to replace on the 4 banger. How well is your cooling system maintained?

for our v6's i think at every timing belt replacement they put on a new water pump and seals and do a coolant drain and fill, and if your drive belts need replaced they'll do them also.

Pretty sure the cooling system was poorly maintained. Most people just drive and do nothing. I bought the truck used, noticed the engine compartment was a bit grimy so I made an offer that I was comfortable with and drove away with a smile on my face. Gonna get need winshield wiper arms because they worked loose and chewed up the aluminum.
today's job took just about three hours with a nice pace, started with degrease using orange citrus spray, drained radiator, took out shroud, fan and radiator. got rid of bug and brush debris. went to autozone and bought three new belts, scraped old silicone off. put on Blue gasket goop new gasket, new studs for fan. tensioned new belts, radiator and shroud back in, filled it up with antifreeze and turned it back on. No more leak.
Thanks everyone for the belt, pulley advice, it was the right time to do the belts.

still not a bad idea to check the chain

The water pump bolts up to the front of the timing chain cover. You would need to tear into the gear housing to check the timing chains.
