Either way you look at it, doing an air box mod is just making it easier to get air into the motor. This usually doesnt do tone for HP or MPG unless you do your exaust too(I have yet to do). If your 4 banger has any type of restrictions in the intake system you can do some kind of mod. Weather that be removing baffles or cutting holes into the bottom of intake box.. Be creative. Look on the 4 cyl threads for air box mods that have already been done. Or Be the leader! Do your mods take pictures and post HOW-TO's. Best of luck!
