Switch layout
Newbie.
Doing some electrical upgrades. I'm almost finished with my fog light setup by installing a combo switch on the steering column, and re-routing the cables to the fog light ends. Question: What are all the blanks for? I know the power mirror at the top. So, I have three lower blanks. I'd like to fill one with an original security light to my after market alarm, but not sure what they were originally for. Any picts would be helpful too. |

One of my blanks had (yes had, it got ripped out when i was doing more wiring) my alarm light.
Now my two blanks have switches that I used for sirens... but since I have a lot of electrical gadgets, i ended up mounting them inside my center armrest. Pics are below of my current "mirror area" switches and of my center armrest process: ![]() And the verbage is from my site going over what I did: One thing that saved me a lot of time was the skid-free fabric that Nissan includes in their armrest. I used this to draw my template on the piece of plexiglass. Then i used my RotoZip to cut out the shape. ![]() This is the plexiglass all cut out. Its not as smooth as I wanted it, but for my purpose it will do fine (i'll be covering it with black vinyl in the end anyway, so nobody will see the edges) ![]() I picked up some wood at home depot. Cost me $1.20 for a very long piece. Turns out the thickness of the wood is the perfect thickness for my spacer. So i just needed to cut it to length. ![]() I cutout 2 pieces of the wood and screwed them to the arm rest from below (to keep them secure). ![]() Once they were secured from below, I secured the plexiglass to the wood to keep it from moving around. ![]() $40 worth of wire and switches. I'll be using 6 switches in my switchbox (although I'll probably only have 4 that are actually being used, never hurts to prepare for future addons). I got lots of wire because i'll need it later on for other things. ![]() Well after a half hour of nerve racking noise, i finally got my switches in. I went through 2 other styles of switches before I found these. They were the only ones that fit. I drove around all day trying to find them, took 5 radio shacks to get these finally (each radio shack only had a few). Their not aligned perfectly but they are pretty close and they will do the job just fine. Now I just need to paint it and wire it. ![]() Finally finished the soldering and I attached the switches to the plexiglass. My first REAL soldering job, im quite proud of this. ![]() Heres a back view of the switches, notice all the soldering. ![]() Just a picture of all the switches and plexiglass installed. That hole the wires are running through is stock, the arm rest came like that. ![]() Heres a back view of all the switch wires. I'll wireloom this once it's installed. ![]() Im giving part of the plexi a frosted coating. Im going to put the StreetGlow logo on the frosted part (in vinyl) and then spray over the entire thing with black spray paint. Then i'll remove the StreetGlow logo and put a neon light below it, which will shine through with an indirect glow. ![]() Here you can get the idea of how it will look with the top of the armrest installed. I only frosted part of the plexiglass because im not putting neon anywhere else except for one area. Everything will be painted black in the end. ![]() After 3 coats of black paint I think its finally ready for installation (yeah I messed up a bit with making it run, ohh well its just a switchbox) ![]() Ahh the vinyl logo worked out well (thanks Joe). Came out better then I expected it too. ![]() I ripped this EL sheet out of one of our EL Pedals, works out nicely (although it still does give more glow then I wanted) ![]() I had to cut the EL sheet to make it fit, I hope it glows still. ![]() I was releived when I found out I could cut the EL sheet and it still functioned (this will prove useful for some later projectors which are hush hush for now) ![]() Looks just like any other ordinary arm rest, but wait... ![]() Ahh there we go, 6 switches and a little custimized logo. Even though this isn't perfection, its still my first true custom job and i'm very happy with it. Afterall, its just a switchbox. ![]() Now that my truck's back from getting leather installed, you can see how the switch panel looks installed. Hopefully this will cease the confusion on "did you use your entire arm rest for that." As you can see I still have my main storage below it. ![]() This is the new switchbox. I redid the plexi because I wasn't happy with the paintjob/switch holes and plexi cutout. ![]() Heres the switchbox with the neon on. ![]() ![]()
