Question Removing Rhino lining or something simliar

The previous owner of my truck had Rhino lining(or something similar) coated on the bed. I am looking for advice on getting the product off in a certain area. They weren't thinking and coated the bolts that are used to remove my tail light cover, so needless to say i have a tail light out right now and i cant get to it to change it. I have tried a heat gun and it was very slow and not very effective. The stuff heats up and gets soft but is so thick and gooey that I can spread it around but it doesn't come off very easily.

Any suggestions from anyone who has removed this stuff would be appreciated. Thanks

You will probably have to carefully cut it away with a utility knife or something similar.

X2, this seems like the only thing that would work.

Cutting it away was my first thought. Probably with a razor blade very carefully.

I can also see how (depending on the fastener type ) if it is stuck down in the slots of a philips type screw/bolt how cutting it may not work well enough.

I sprayed a product similar to Rhino lining on a jeep tub and didn't wear gloves while doing it. I got it all over my hands during refill.

I tried a variety of things to get it off my hands. After a few days of walking around with black gunk on my hands I eventually found the only thing that worked for removal of that product was laquer thinner (not paint thinner).

But if attempting this, you may want to just dip a q-tip in it because laquer thinner dissolves all sorts of stuff, probably including your paint. Note I would only recommend this in order to help remove spray on lining from an area such as the slots of a Philips screw.

I would also keep the can of laquer thinner far away from the truck or atleast on the ground while doing this in order to avoid accidents.

I do not know if it works on all spray-on liners.

I did not use it on a truck but it did work for removal of the spray-on-liner from my hands.

I use laquer thinner all the time at work (I detail cars). i use it to remove heavy scuff marks from door sills and such. I just pour a little onto a rag and scrub the spot. The most extreme thing that it will do is discolor the plastic a little bit. It wont hurt the paint, because this is one of the only things that will remove the goo from the double sided tape used for emblems. I really dont think that it will remove the lining from the bed because it is so thick. You can try it though.

As for the removal, I would try a die grinder. Maybe a Dremel tool with a heavy duty sanding tip. Good luck

That's good to know ncsujrock. I knew the chemical composition of automotive paints is different from that of laquer but never used it on paint. Thanx for disclosing.

My neighbor was a chemistry teacher and had access to all sorts of chemicals. I asked for his suggestion and he brought a few things over. Nothing worked and I just started buying stuff off the shelf b/c nothing else was working.

So scuffs are removed by using laquer thinner?
Is it removing clear-coat in addition to scuffs?

Not being a smart-A**. I'd really like to know.

I just mainly use it on plastic interior pieces. Like door sills and glove boxes, where people kick them with their shoes and leave scuffs. As far as I know, plastic pieces dont have a clear coat.

If you do use it on plastic, just dont scrub too hard or it will discolor in that spot. And DO NOT get it on leather seats. I had a guy do this and it ruined the seat. Look like some one spilled bleach on it. It does do a good job on the scuffs tho. BTW, when I use it on paint, I always wipe over it with a wet cloth when I get done using the laquer thinner.

You could always carefully drill the bolt heads out/off. Drilling might be the best way to avoid mangling the liner where you don't want it scraped off. Pop out the light, unscrew the remaining stud, and go to the hardware store for replacements.
That sucks someone did that, but hey, there are knob heads everywhere you turn.
And if it were me, I'd do both sides (passenger and driver side) while you're going to all that bother, because sooner or later you'll need that side off as well.

x2, that's what I was thinking once I saw the picture. You could scrape for days and not ever get the goop out of the screw head. I would drill and tap it. This should get it out the quickest without and damage to the rest of the coating.
