Hello all,
I currently own a 2004 Frontier Crew Cab 4X4 with 85K miles on it. I just removed my truck's bed to replace the infamous leaky fuel tank (NO HELP FROM MOTHER NISSAN), and while the bed is off, I'm thinking of replacing the shocks. Anyone here have a suggestion on what brand has been good to them? I found a decent deal online for the Rancho RS9000XL Shocks, just don't want to end up regretting the purchase.
When I searched for shock threads last month it appeared to me that Bilstein was by far the preferred shock. I just couldn't spend almost $400 on a set of 4. With the rebate KYB had going (may still have it -- $40 off of purchase of 4 select shocks), I went with them (KYB Gas-a-just) for about half that. I obviously can't speak about their longevity, but as far as "feel" goes, I like them a lot. Granted, the 90k mile, 9 year old OE shocks were shot and had the truck feeling like a boat, but these seem to have a good solid feel to them. The truck feels much more stable.
Thanks JS and JP.
My truck being a 4X4 naturally looks lifted when compared to a standard 2 wheel drive Fronty. Some of the shocks parts sites I've found listed online ask if the truck is lifted 2" or 3". I would assume my answer would be no, as it's stock. Is this correct?
I'm looking into the KYB's, thanks Jerry.
I've run Ranchos on previous cars of mine didn't care for them to much. The bilsteins are perfect but they are a little bit more money. They are truly worth it though in the long run. I'm running the Bilstein 5100 series on all 4 corners 4x4parts has them rather cheaper than most places. But even the 4600 series is still a great all around shock.
I bought into the whole Rancho hype at one time. I only made that mistake once. I cannot attest to the 9000's, but the 5000's sucks b@lls. 4x4Parts have Bilsteins 5100's for $78 a piece, $312 + shipping for all 4.
I have a 2003 and I recently installed belltech street performance shocks. They give me a smooth ride. The truck takes corners really well and i would recommend them.
Im running KYB Gas-A-Just's and am not impressed with them, I was hoping for a stiffer ride they ride exactly the same as stock shocks with 90K on them, I might be switching to something else soon.
I got the Monroe Reflex Monotubes for dirt cheap ( # 911529 Front ) and really like them, big improvement over stock. Make sure it's Monotube, when you decide.
Herbbie, belltech gives me a stiffer ride than the OEM. The price point is good and I am satisfied with how the truck handles. I ordered them from stillen and paid 210 for a full set.
I got my Bilstein's at Auto Zone. After they refunded my low price lifetime ones plus buying from their website, I got them for $260. Plus, these are lifetimes also.
I know everyone here justifiably prefers the bilsteins, and some dislike the ranchos, but with the Monroe shocktober rebate, and I got a 1 day 20% email coupon on sunday from JC Whitney, I'll end up with a set of Rancho RS5000 delivered to the house for under $120 bucks after the rebate (which is hopefully before the 20% discount).
btw, they're going on a 2.4 2wd.... so they wont get beat on too bad
i got the bilstein 4600 installed on my 2004 frontier crewcab v6 @ 109k miles. I personally feel that the stock shocks handled better than these new bilstein 4600's. i wanted the bilstein 5100's, but when i called bilstein... they said it won't fit on a 1st gen fronty. All in all, they drive better than blown out shocks ::grin::
